Title: Taking Prometrium to prevent PTL
Post by: kaitibear on May 05, 2009 at 06:13 PM
Hello! I have had several people ask me about my experience with taking Prometrium to prevent preterm labor. Many had only heard of the P17 injection. My doctor has had me on an oral medication called Prometrium since week 20 of pregnancy. I have had good results so far. I am 30 weeks this week which is 3 weeks longer than my first pregnancy. Here is the info that I have found about Prometrium:

Helps provide nurtering environment for fertilized egg
Helps placenta ward off any bacteria that could harm baby
Helps develop mucous plug
Keeps pelvic walls strong
Prevents contractions until labor
Plays a part in lactation after birth

This may be worth discussing with your dr. Like everything else it may not be for everyone but it never hurts to ask.

Are you taking the Prometrium in addition to the P17 shots or are you only taking Prometrium?

I am only taking the prometrium. My dr does not have me on the P17 injections.
