Title: New to forum, 22 weeks and 5 days with short cervix
Post by: crnatasha on July 17, 2014 at 10:32 PM
Hi, I'm Natasha and I'm so glad I found KeepEmCookin!

Here's my story.  I'm 38 year old mother of two teenagers 18 and 16.  Both were full term.  I'm 22 weeks and 5 days with a short cervix.  Last week, I began experiencing what felt like menstrual cramps but they were coming 5 minutes apart.  I thought they were Braxton Hicks contractions so I went a day before calling my doctor.  When, I went in the next day my doctor said they were contractions, I was dehydrate, and I had dilated 1 cm.  I was sent to pregnancy triage. I received IV fluids and my cervix was checked twice more.  I was sent home still having mild contractions, which they said would stop on there own.

I woke up the next morning and noticed bleeding.  I was so afraid.  I immediately got up went back to pregnancy triage.  I told me that I maybe bleeding from the cervical checks yesterday.  I was checked again and they couldn't understand were the bleeding was coming from.  They decided to keep me over night.  I again received IV fluids.  The spotting and contractions stopped.  I was sent home and giving an appointment to get an ultrasound.

Monday, I received an ultrasound and that's when they told me that my cervix was very short.  They never told me how short.  I was admitted into the hospital again.  I was told my cervix was too short for a cerclage.  They gave me the progesterone tablet that I insert to the vagina nightly.  I stayed two days.  They told me that they were 100% sure that I would deliver early.  How early, they didn't know.

I met with the prenatal doctors and they discuss every thing that could happen to my son.  It's a boy!  It was the most frightening conversation ever.  I was sent home today.  I'm not on bed rest! My doctor said studies show that bed rest doesn't my stop preterm labor but every time a read anything about preterm labor I see bed rest.  I extremely anxious and scared.  She told me to just be lazy.

Can anyone in similar situation tell me if this is normal or should I be on bed rest.  I so scared to do anything.  Thanks in advanced!

Hi Natasha,

Sorry you are going through such a hard time.

Reasons behind pre-term labor are largely unknown. As they do not know what causes it, doctors cannot be sure of the treatment. Bed rest may help and may not help.

Short cervix, on the other hand, is a different issue. Bed rest, to a point, will decrease the weight forced upon the cervix which may help further shortening and funnelling.

I had my daughter in 2010, full term. Today I am 37 years old, 33 weeks pregnant with short cervix. At 20 week ultrasound, I was diagnosed with short cervix and asked to be on bed rest. I had few more ultrasounds to check the length. It varied between 1.7-2.1 cm at 20-21 weeks when it is suspposed to be 4-5 cm.

I have been on bed rest since. I did not have any contractions or bleeding. Today marks the 3 month completion of bed rest for me.

I cannot offer any medical advice though but please try to take it easy. Drink lots of water. Dehydration can cause contractions.

Nothing is 100% sure. All pregnant women are at risk of pre-term labor. Most women who experience pre-term labor go to deliver full-term. My doctor said about the short cervix is not a good measure of pre-term labor. It increases the risk for sure but it is not guaranteed that the woman with short cervix will deliver early.

Check with your doctor about the length of the cervix. Are you still on progesterone?

Do keep us updated. Best of luck!!

Thanks Prachi,

Yes I'm still on progesterone.  I take them every night.  I go Monday for an ultrasound to check fetal growth and to get steroid shot to help with his lung development in case he does come early.  I will ask about cervix length.  I'm just scared of every little thing.  I don't how long I should be on my feet, should I sit-up, lay down, and more.

Unfortunately there is no specific rule about the bed rest unless doctor has said something. In my case, I am supposed to be lying down most of the day.But I could use the bathroom and have a shower and sit down for dinner every night. After 24 weeks, I could go the restaurant once a week with my family. But no walking. My husband will drop me in front of the restaurant and I will just go inside and sit down.

At 31 weeks, I was allowed to cook dinner.

Now at 33 weeks, I am allowed to move a bit more and once I hit 34 weeks, I will be off the bed rest.

I would try to be off my feet as much as possible if I was you. Are you working outside the house?

I'm a high school math teacher.  I'm off right now for summer break but I go back soon.  My doctor said I would be able to go back just light duty.  I'm afraid to go back.  She doesn't think I should be on bed rest.  She said just be lazy.  I'm not sure what that means.

Maye make a list of activities you do around the house and the job and think about how strenuous you find them and then ask the doctor at the next appointment about the list.

My doctor told me to be a couch potato but when I started asking specific questions about specific activities, it turned out there was not much I was allowed to do.

Sounds like you are doing all you can to take care of your angel. My cerclage is holding very well and I believe saved my twins. I am 26+2 and had mine in at 22 weeks. My cervix was down to 1.8cm from 2.7 the week prior. It was shortening extremely fast. I was soo terrified. I'm stable now doing bed rest with bathroom and shower privileges until I get out of this critical time. Good luck you can go a long way with the cerclage or without the cerclage! Praying for you!

Thanks Nicoleclark,

So glad your stable! I'm trying to understand why a wasn't able to get a cerclage.  I have an OB appt tomorrow. I'm afraid of what they may say but praying for good news. I'm praying for you are your twins as well.

Even without a cerclage you can have hope that you will go much further! I've heard of many women making it very far with and without. Don't lose hope! Praying for you!

I just want to echo all the fantastic advice Prachi gave. Yes, the studies on bedrest and preterm labor are inconclusive, but cervical shortening is a different thing. Another thing to consider talking to your doc about is a pessary device. If they don't want to do a cerclage, a pessary inserted at midttrimester (btwn 20-24 weeks) has promising evidence. I'm not an OB, so can't offer expert advice, but just a suggestion for something to discuss with your doc! Good luck, and please keep checking in!

Honestly I don't need studies to prove that when I get up my contractions start coming stronger and more frequently than when lying down. Feel like in these cases u really need to know your body. My dr says he trusts me to trust my body...to do what I need to do as long as don't feel like overdue it. Currently at 34 weeks with my fourth premature lAbor after three preemies hoping for full term this time . This she first time with cerclage so feel a little more secure this time around.

Crnatasha, how was your appointment today?   Thinking of you.

Post by: crnatasha on July 21, 2014 at 07:17 PM
Thanks Nicoleclark for asking, Thanks evelyn, I agree. I feel more secure when I'm laying down. Thanks Batting 200.  My appointment today was okay. No bad news is good news at this point.

I got an ultrasound to see how much he weighs. He's 1lb 2oz, so heing growing well. The ultrasound showed that my cervix is about the same, so that's good.  Still didn't find out the exact shortness of my cervix. I didn't get a manual cervical check, which I was happy about.

I got a little more clarity on the activities I should be doing which is not much at all. I feel better knowing.
I found out I will not be able to go back to work next week. So finances will be a problem soon. I recieved a steroid shot to help with lung maturity. I go back tomorrow for another one.

Only thing the worried me today was the ultrasound tech having his head was low by my pelvic bone.  But everything else was okay. Knowing that i'm not they only one going through this is since a major comfort.  I thank you all and pray that we all will deliver healthy babies.

Sounds like you're stable which is good. My twin A's head is in the same spot and has been since I can remember. So far it hasn't been a problem. I'm sorry about work. It will all be worth it when you're precious baby is here. Keep your head up!

Thanks Nicoleclark. I never thought that I was stable until you said so. Crazy how sometimes I can't even think in that way.  I'm so glad I found this site.  You just put a smile on my face.  Not really a person that worries but I'm always been that moms that worries about her children probably more than most.  So thanks again.

Natasha- maybe now is the time to apply for disability? Ask your doc if she can be on board with that, as you need to listen to your body. I can relate to how financially crushing this is, btw. Also for me, it puts tremendous pressure on my marriage, as my husband has to work double time caring for me. He does this lovingly, but it takes its toll. Do you have anyone helping you out?

Hi Sarah, I'm applying for Family Medical Leave through my job.  I didn't know if a could apply for disability but I will ask because I know I still will need time off when baby does arrive. I have some help.  Thanks for asking.  Looking forward to Saturday, 24 week mark for us.

How are you doing girl? 24 weeks now right?! I'm also on FMLA. So far it has worked well for us.
Title: Re: New to forum, 22 weeks and 5 days with short cervix

Natasha- it's my understanding that you can apply for disability now, and pregnancy leave after the baby is born. So I'd go with disability first to maximize things financially. It's going to be a real crunch for us, too- as my husband is also unemployed and looking for work! But on the bright side-here we are at 24 weeks!!! That's the brilliant news!!! Keep up the good work!!!

Thanks Sarah, I will look into disability and save FMLA for after the baby has arrived.  Yes, Nicole me and Sarah made it to 24 weeks today.  I'm was so happy this morning.  Next, goal is 26 weeks.

I had an OB appointment today. It went well.  They listened to the baby and he sound good.  I ask about the length of my cervix and my doctor stated that when they did measure my cervix it was too thin to measure which frightened me.  He said he wasn't going to check me and to come back in two weeks.  I guess I'm stable an the progesterone suppositories are helping.  I which it was more they could do and I could do to make me feel more secure.  They seem surprised that I'm still carrying him.  One good thing my doctor said was seeing that I went full term with my other too that it was unlikely that I would have a preterm baby but every pregnancy is different. That was a little comforting.  It's just been a very anxious day for me.  My sister left today and that was very emotional and scary.

I made it to 26 weeks today! I'm so happy! When they first told me about my short cervix, I thought I wouldn't make it to 24 weeks. I was extremely scared and very anxious. Now I'm more positive. I still has anxiety and bed rest brings on more problems, financially, guilt, and much more.  But all that's important right now is keeping him cooking.  Thanks, again for all the support.  I pray everyone is doing great. Congrats, Sarah on 26 weeks!

Post by: All for Gus on August 10, 2014 at 09:21 AM
I am new to this site and looking for some hope from similar stories. Healthy baby boy at 20 week US. However they found my cervix dilated to 4cm and I had zero cervix to measure and my water bag was in my V. They did a recovery cerclage and it worked so far! Has anyone carried full term
with a situation like this? All hopeful stories please share. I had no labor pains and had irritability but not many contractions.

Hello crnatasha,

I was going through your posts , i am so glad you are 26 weeks now. It's encouraging to see you are able to make it form 21 weeks to here.  I wanted to let you know I was almost 5 cm dilated with  90% effaced cervix at 28 weeks and then made to term with no intervention except bed rest.

In 3rd trimester the cervical length doesn't mean much unless you are having contraction. GL I think you can surely make to term.

Hi Dreeem,

Hearing that in the third trimester the cervical length doesn't mean much unless having contractions is the best news I've heard in weeks.  That just put a hugr smile on my face. In tears right now because that has bring me so much unbelievable comfort.  Thank you so much. This is why I'm on this site every day because you ladies know my struggle and your support gives me more hope than any doctor has ever giving me.

GL to you as well and how are you doing now?

I have not started the nursery either, although we have bought the furniture and bedding before I was put on bedrest.
We are planning on starting building the furniture next week if everything looks good after my medical appointment on Friday (when I say "we", I actually mean that I will be reading the instructions manual and DH and his father will build the furniture!)
What are you ladies planning to do?

Welcome Baby Tyden. Born October 22, at 3:23, 5lbs 1oz.  He was sent to NICU for fast breathing and heart rate was also fast. He was receiving oxygen and was on C-pap but he's no longer on C-pap nor receiving oxygen. He's receiving antibiotics for 7 days due to an infection, I had a 10% placental abruption. So I'm glad he came when he did. I was 36 weeks 4 days. I stop taking my progesterone suppositories at 36 weeks and 1 day.

Thanks everyone, Sarah yes we have been on this journey together. I'm in NICU now, just finished nursing. He is so adorable! The new love of my life!

I went to my doctors appointment Tuesday, Oct 21st. I had my first manual cervical check since July. I was 3 cm dilated and I think 80% efface. I was told to be ready but that doesn't mean he'll come right away. I did fine all of Tuesday except that night I couldn't sleep. Wednesday morning, I startinv having contractions around 9am or so. I thought they were Braxton hicks so I drank a lot of water, laid down and even soaked in tub to try and get them to go away. Nothing worked, so I decided I should go to the hospital. As I was getter ready to go contractions intensified and I knew I was in labor.

When I got to triage, I was checked I was 4cm dilated. They told me I would be admitted. It was about 11:45 am. I stayed in triage until maybe 3pm or so. I don't know why it took so long. Finally got to labor and delivery and I was checked again, I was 7cm and 100% efface. I got epidural first time ever but as they were setting up to get it my water broke. They finally got the epidural in and as soon as they finished it was time to push so the epidural had not even kicked in. I had him with about 6 pushes at 3:23 pm. Very quick labor!

Wow! What a story! Any chance we can see pics??? ;)

I'm right behind you!!!

Also, this is crazy-when I called my doula last night about my contractions, she suggested a glass of wine and a bath. I was hesitant to drink the alcohol, but I did as told, and the contractions stopped. I instead, I just had a little bit of beer. Then I researched and read that a little alcohol can stop contractions-FYI. But of course, I would never recommend drinking while pregnant!!!

Wow Natasha, congrats on your precious Tyden!
I also delivered yesterday, at 36 weeks sharp!
Baby Philippe is a very healthy, 5lbs 9oz baby boy. I will post the whole story on my thread later but I too had a VERY quick labour... I guess our bodies were ready!
In my opinion, my experience has convinced me that bedrest DOES work as I had only been off bedrest for a couple of days and off progesterone for 1 night only! Thank god I followed doctors orders and I had a doctor who believed in bedrest, otherwise I may not have such a healthy boy in my arms right now!
Good luck with your sweet baby and good luck to all the other moms to be!
