Title: How long did your emergency/rescue cerclage hold???
Post by: JessicaRN2009 on June 22, 2017 at 06:05 PM
At 21 weeks I had less than 1cm of cervix left, bulging membranes and fingertip dilated. I had a rescue cerclage placed after doctor was able to push back in my daughters sac. I was in the hospital for 3 days after procedure and have been on strict bed rest, vaginal suppositories, procardia ever since. I am now 25weeks and 3 days. My doctor said we are lucky if we got through the first 48 hours and after that lucky if we make it 5 weeks. Of course I am hoping to carry to term and wondering how long everyone was able to go with their cerclage. Looking for hope.

Hi Jessica!
I'm pregnant with twins, with emergency cerclage placed and made it to 34 weeks, 13 weeks total of hospital bed rest- since I had my waters broke after first week with cerclage. My doctor recommendation was bed rest, showers on shower bench and to stay bored.
Good luck to you, you can do it to the full term!!!!

Thank you for the reply I pray we can make it to term. I just don't understand why my doctor only thinks at the most we will make it a total of only 5 weeks.  You give me hope.  CAnt wait to hear more stories that can give me hope to carry much longer.

Hello,

When I went in for a routine ultrasound at 19.5 weeks, they noticed that my water bag had slipped through the cervix (a condition called "hourglass membranes"). It took me a week of traveling between three different hospitals to find a doctor willing to attempt an emergency cerclage.  It also involves pushing the water bag back in to make the stitch. Luckily at 20.5 weeks I was able to get an emergency cerclage. I am on 26 weeks + 5 days now.  I am on strict bed rest. I can get up for the restroom and occasional shower. My doctor is optimistic that I will make it.  I am not on progesterone, only strict bed rest. My doctor basically said if my stitch holds past two weeks after surgery, his confidence level goes up. My doctor is more confident than I am lol. I did have two rounds of steroid shots for the baby's lungs this week. I try to take it a day at a time. It's just easier for me to mentally deal with all this.

You should check out Wylee's story on this site. Every situation is different but it gave me some hope.

My doctor is a firm believer in bed rest though. He treated another patient that needed an emergency cerclage around the same time I did. That patient did not follow his bed rest orders and only lasted 3 weeks after the emergency cerclage.   I will say that not every doctor I met with when trying to get a cerclage done was a believer in bed rest. Luckily I listened to my gut and have stayed on it since finding the hourglasses membranes.

Hugs and I wish you the bed.25 weeks is awesome! I know I was thrilled just to get to week 24 and then out of it :)

Thank you so much Candace for the reply. I PM'd you too you are quick. I wish my doc was more optimistic. I don't really understand why she thins we will only make it to 26-28 weeks. My cervix is stable at 1.9cm still some funneling which is probably just left from prior to cerclage placement. I have an appointment with her next Wednesday the 28th and she will check cervix again then I will be 26weeks 3 days. Maybe next week I can ask her what makes her think I won't make it to term, is she concerned with infection? Stitch not holding?  I'm doing everything I can, all the meds, strict bed rest only up to bathroom and shower sitting down every other day only for 5 minutes. I rarely have a contraction. And of course lots of prayer!! Please keep me updated on how you are doing.

UPDATE...... I went to specialist yesterdat for a check up. I'm currently 26 weeks, baby looks amazing and she's actually measuring a week ahead :). My cervix did shorten this visit 1.9cm after cerclage to 1.4cm and still have u-shaped funneling but cerclage is holding.  As of today I have already made it farther then the doctors thought I ever would. So we continue to take it week by week and try to get as close to 30 weeks as possible. I'm being very strict with my bedrest, I only get up to bathroom and shower sitting every other day but she said that when I'm laying I need to be diligent in elevating my pelvis so I will work on that. I go back to normal ob on the 10th I will be 28 weeks then. Prayers and lots of baby dust that I can prove everyone wrong and make it closer to 36 ??????I will keep you all updated

Good luck JessicaRN2009 - you're already doing so well. Glad to hear that your baby is doing well. You also seem very optimistic. I had a difficult time staying positive through bed rest - so it's awesome to see you in such good spirits. (At least, I hope that's what I'm reading in your message).

Yay positive energy!

Thank you Dana. I'm trying to be positive. Keeping my eye on the prize, I also have three other children that keep me entertained throughout the day so I'm never alone, which definetly helps.
How is your baby doing? Any time frame on how long she will have to stay in nicu. Lots of prayers coming your way.

Thank you Dana. ... How is your baby doing? Any time frame on how long she will have to stay in nicu. Lots of prayers coming your way.

No time frame - just lots of feeding/growing/staying warm at this point. I'm going to stay in a hospital apartment until she comes home. I'm just so glad that there is a NICU to take care of her and make sure that she's beginning her life well.

Here's hoping other Mommas are able to carry their babies longer and can avoid the potential challenges that go with NICU life!   ;D

That's awesome Dana. I'm glad you get to stay near the hospital so you can be with your baby as much as possible while in the nicu. Keep us updated on her progress

UpdAte!!!31 weeks today. Went to specialist and cervix held steady no changes!!!!! Doctor was so surprised, this is the first time I have felt so optimistic that I'm going to make it to at least the 36 week mark ( I make big goals). Cervix is still closed and measuring 1.4cm, cerclage holding strong !!! Without bedrest and cerclage we would have never made it. Feeling so blessed !!!!

That's awesome to hear!!!

I got my cerclage put in at 16 weeks, and I am 29 weeks now. Thank god for it or I don't know how long I would of made it. And I'm so thankful for my weekly injections and best rest. My next goal is 36 weeks so I can get it taken out. Best of luck to you girl! Love hearing these great stories.

Hello there, glad to hear you are also going strong. I'm 33 weeks tomorrow :) hopefully I can make it to 36 and then I want to ask to have cerclage taken out at 37 instead of 36 if possible. I will keep everyone updated, and please do the same.

uodate!!!!!
I went to specialist today and Baby looks great and is weighing in at 5 lbs 15 oz and still measuring a week ahead. She doesn't want to check my cervix anymore to not irritate it. She wants me to keep doing what I'm doing so that I can hopefully make it to 9-16 where I am scheduled to get the cerclage removed, I would be 37 weeks and 5 days on that date, then she's hoping I will make it to my 39 week csection. Hopefully my body will keep her in until at least cerclage removal.

That's awesome to hear!! I have an ultrasound tomorrow and see Doctor. It's not my normal doctor.... He's out of town. So I'm hoping I will see him again in two weeks. And ask when I will get my stitch out. He tolls me a few weeks ago. That he would take it out around 36 or 37 weeks. I will be 31 weeks tomorrow!! I would be so happy if he took it out at 36 weeks. Which would be the day before my birthday. But I would like her to stay in for at least 37+ weeks. We will see :) two weeks ago she weighted 3lbs. Wonder how much she will weight tomorrow! So glad everyone is doing so well!

Kfontana- glad to hear you have made it to 31 weeks, 36 weeks is right around the corner. I purposely want mine out after 37 weeks because I don't want her born before then. Hopefully my body will hold onto to her until then. Keep us updated :)

Thank you! I really want it out at 36 BUT if it will keep her out of the NICU I could wait another week  :)  I hope my body will hold onto as well! I can't believe I've made it this far. Such an amazing feeling! Thank god for my cerclage, weekly injections & bed rest. How far along are you now? Keep us updated as well!

I was 35 weeks as of yesterday. So close!!! Just hoping water doesn't break before  9/16 cerclage removal. On that day I will be 37 weeks and 5 days and at that point she would be good to come anytime.
I'm sure you will Make it. I will keep you posted and please do the same.
