Pregnancy Complications / Re: Short cervix at 20 weeks
« on: July 03, 2017 at 12:12 PM »
Hi Aciric,

While I don't have helpful advise for you, I will let you know that I read your post and my heart goes out to you. For my part, I wasn't given a "choice" about the cerclage vs. progesterone vs. bedrest, etc. My specialist immediately sent me to the hospital where an OB surgeon informed me that my best option was a cerclage and we could do it or risk losing the baby.

Given those options - I clearly chose surgery the next morning. I'm not sure what I would have done if surgery wasn't an option.

Concerning Braxton-Hicks or contractions, my "contractions" didn't measure on the "contraction machine". That said - after surgery for the cerclage I never had those "contractions" again until I actually went into labor and they DID measure on the machine at that time.

Speak up about what you're feeling. Hound someone for a second opinion if you can - it's your medical care and your family's future. Good luck!

Thank you Dana. ... How is your baby doing? Any time frame on how long she will have to stay in nicu. Lots of prayers coming your way.

No time frame - just lots of feeding/growing/staying warm at this point. I'm going to stay in a hospital apartment until she comes home. I'm just so glad that there is a NICU to take care of her and make sure that she's beginning her life well.

Here's hoping other Mommas are able to carry their babies longer and can avoid the potential challenges that go with NICU life!   ;D

Good luck JessicaRN2009 - you're already doing so well. Glad to hear that your baby is doing well. You also seem very optimistic. I had a difficult time staying positive through bed rest - so it's awesome to see you in such good spirits. (At least, I hope that's what I'm reading in your message).

Yay positive energy!

Hi Kfontana87 -

Apart from the scary part of her being in the NICU, she seems to be doing well. She's big for 32 weeks (maybe because I had Gestational Diabetes) but they're focusing on her jaundice, feeding, and growing. She was able to breathe room air when she was born so we didn't need respiratory assistance, and she was eating well (suck/swallow coordination) so she didn't need her feeding tube or IV after the first day.

Honestly - I'm grateful for her stability. After having such a rough pregnancy, it's nice to know that she was very much doing well in spite of it all.

Congrats on making it to 22 weeks! What's your next gestation goal?

Hi again Jessica,

I was on bedrest at home until 28/29 weeks. Then I was on modified bedrest until Saturday. I had meds after the cerclage but didn't need any of them - I just rested and when the anesthesia wore off, I was in a good place. I also didn't move much for the following 2 - 3 days except to use the restroom. After that I was able to get up and heat food or use the restroom.

Congrats Dana & Suzie!!

I can join the club 2 as I also had my wee boy on Saturday night at 20.56 via emergency section!!

LO doing great on CPAP but on the lowest setting and looks like he will be off that soon. So relieved to have him here safely. Getting home tomorrow, then  onto the NICU I hope they are short and uneventful for all.

Nikki

Thanks for the props! I'm in the same released state that you are. LOL - my little one was born merely 12 hrs and 30 minutes before yours! Maybe there's something in the internet or the sun this weekend.

I hope the NICU stays for our little ones are productive and help them grow into strong babies!

Hi Dana. Thank you for answering at what week did you give birth. Did you make it to term? Did you have bulging membranes or anything when they placed it?  All these stories give me hope. I'm still holding at 25 weeks. Have appt on wednesday to see how everything is looking. I will update everyone.

Hi Jessica! Saturday was 32 weeks and no I did not make it to term. Perhaps I was unclear. I went into pre-term labor with my daughter (Saturday) and the cerclage was the only thing stopping her from literally coming on the way to the hospital. I had no other signs of her coming ... no dilation/effacement, water breaking/membrane rupture or bulging. When they originally placed the cerclage (around 20 weeks) I had funneling with a little less than 2 cm of closed cervix left and I was not dilated.

Let me know if that is any clearer. Sometimes I leave important details out on accident.  :-\

I have a completely new perspective to add to your question. I got my cerclage around 20 weeks.

I just had the baby yesterday (Saturday am at 8:23 am). The ONLY thing keeping her in WAS the cerclage... (and I was having fierce contractions).  So ... yeah. Pending your doctor's work, that sucker will hold.

Congrats SuzieQMom - the brave holder of twins! I'm so glad you and the twins (boys?!?) will be able to go home safe and sound! So awesome! What an incredible birth story you have!

General update for me - I DID go into labor and ended up having my Lady Lyra Saturday morning at 8:23 am via cesarean. She's in the NICU and probably will be for a while. We've passed some major milestones, so I'm really happy about that. Just trying to rest and get milk going.

I hope everyone else is still cooking their little ones!!

Well now it's my turn to go to Labor and Delivery. I'm 31+6 today. If we can't stop these contractions I may be bringing a little one home sooner rather than later! Apparently I'm back on hospital bed rest until tomorrow. At least I'm in a good mood!  8)

Kfontana87 - congrats on making it to 21 + 2! It's awesome to see you so positive. I'm glad that you're keeping your spirits up! Keep the updates coming!

When you have a chance, don't forget to give us updates! I hope you and the boys are doing alright! :D

Hi Ladies! Just an update...

Well, I'm in labor and delivery! Made it to 35+1. My water broke yesterday. I was lying in bed and reached over to grab my crochet hook and felt a gush. These boys are ready to make their appearance. The doctors told me I'm released from bed rest- that I can now go for a long walk if I like! Lol! I walked to the hospital cafeteria, which was closed :)

Keep us in your thoughts! Thanks for all the support over the months! You all have helped me through a tough time. Praying my boys will come out screaming and healthy.

Keep em cookin'! Big hugs!

I'm still on them.

From what research I can find and have discussed with colleagues, there is no really striking evidence that it does or doesn't help. Depends on your OB or MFM's belief about the research.
