Making the Best of Bed Rest / Monday Roll Call for April 12, 2021

“I am extraordinarily patient, provided I get my own way in the end.”
-- Margaret Thatcher

And you will get your own way, ladies! One day at a time...  ;)

Do any of you have a mantra or something you say to yourself to stay motivated during bedrest? For me, my mantra was: "Right now, I am exactly where I am supposed to be." Also, "These weeks (or months) will change the life of my child forever."

Happy Monday!

I hope each of you will schedule something today to anticipate. For example:

*Order a new book/movie/game that you have been wanting.
*Set up 3 calls (or FaceTime, Zoom, etc.) to have with friends or family members this week.
*Ask your partner to take care of that thing around the house that has been driving you crazy but you just haven't felt comfortable asking.

Remember that you are an important person doing an important job!  Don't hesitate to ask for the care and attention you need.  :)

I thought I'd do a fun question this week, to help keep you focused on the end goal: What do you dream of doing with your baby someday? Is there a certain activity? A hobby you'd like to share? A place to go? Tell us!

What's the craziest thing someone has said to you while you've been on bed rest? Here are my faves from my two pregnancies:

1) You're STILL pregnant? Maybe you didn't even need to be on bed rest.
2) I shouldn't say this, but you really remind me of Jabba the Hut.
3) "How are you doing?" ... said by a (male) doctor strolling right into my hospital room and starting up a conversation (and continuing it!) while I was using the bedpan!!!
4) Let me know if you need any help. I can give you the number of my cleaning lady.

I'm sure there were others! Tell me yours!

"You can learn many things from children.
How much patience you have, for instance."
                                    --Franklin P. Jones

Ain't that the truth! And sometimes even before they are born!

Let us know how many weeks along you are, and tell us how you're feeling. Do you have any appointments this week or any news to report from last week?

Welcome to another Monday Roll Call!

I know it can be tough to stay motivated, so I thought it might be good to share the things that brighten your day most. For me, the highlights of bed rest were negative FFN tests, seeing my babies on ultrasound, and my sister visiting on the weekends. So what keeps you going?

And as always, let us know how many weeks along you are and if you have any appointments to look forward to this week. If you had any appointments last week or any trips to L&D last week, let us know how those went.

"Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and freedom."  --Viktor Frankl

So, ladies, what do you wish you could respond to differently? Your partner? This pregnancy? Your children? Your thoughts?

How are you responding now, and what would it look like or what would you say or think to respond differently? How will it free you?

Hello, ladies!

How do you look? I know it may seem silly to get dressed or put on makeup to sit around the house, but you might find that it boosts your spirits! Plus, looking cute may inspire you to set up a time to Zoom or FaceTime with friends!

It was really tough to style my hair with no mirror, but I still found it relaxing to brush and blow dry my hair. A few strokes of lipstick seemed to help me feel like myself again. And don't underestimate the power of a body lotion in your favorite scent. Take a few deep breaths and it can help to calm you, too.  :)

What are YOUR beauty tips for bed rest? Do you feel like your appearance can have an effect on your mood? Feel free to offer your thoughts, or just let us know what's new and how many weeks along you are.

Music! Take some time today for music.

First, think of a song that has always inspired you, like the theme from Rocky, or "Roar" by Katy Perry, or a favorite workout song. Next, pick a song that will take you to another time and place in your life when you were carefree, young and idealistic. Finally, pick a song that means something special to you and your partner, perhaps a song from your wedding or a song from when you first started dating. Don't underestimate the power that music can have on your mood!

As always, let us know how many weeks along you are and how the past week has been. And, tell us a song that inspires you. Here are a few links to get you started:

"Ain't no Mountain High Enough" by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO_PWF0bmoM
"Fighter" by Christina Aguilera: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PstrAfoMKlc
"Stronger" by Kelly Clarkson: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xn676-fLq7I
"Survivor" by Destiny's Child: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wmc8bQoL-J0
"Happy" by Pharrell Williams: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6Sxv-sUYtM

What songs inspire you?

Also, we have lots of visitors to the Monday Roll Call each week, but very few people posting. KeepEmCookin has the greatest impact when we share and connect. Please take a couple of minutes to register and post. Thank you!

It's February and here you are! Your dedication to your babies is wonderful.

Are any of you planning to have a baby shower of some sort? Is tough enough to have a shower when you're on bed rest, but now it's even tougher with COVID. How about a virtual shower though? Could you set up a Zoom? And friends and family could order your gifts to be delivered? Or leave them on your porch? If so, at how many weeks along would you want to have a shower? Or will it depend on when you get off bed rest?

Feel free to share anything else you'd like. How are you doing overall?

Hi, ladies!

I was remembering a time when I was playing with Batman and Robin figures with my son. He said that he wished that he had a Wonder Woman figure so that I could be her.

Of course, that made me think of all of you! You are Wonder Women, doing everything you can for your babies. And you're also so wonderful for the support you provide each other! Whenever someone's having an especially tough day or week, you can be there for them. So thank you!

Anybody have any appointments this week?

Also: Be sure to join our Facebook groups! I'm hoping to build a bigger audience there and give women a way to connect more often.

"I learned that we can do anything, but we can't do everything... at least not at the same time. So think of your priorities not in terms of what activities you do, but when you do them. Timing is everything."
--Dan Millman

And this is your time to cook! Let everything else fall aside ... for now.

So tell me what is new, ladies! What are you looking forward to this week? As always, let us know how many weeks along you are. See you on the Live Chat on Thursday!

There's a passage from a book called "Start with Why" that has stuck with me for a few years now. One example from the book is about an expedition to Antarctica, and it made me think immediately of all the bed rest moms I’ve known.

On December 5, 1914, Ernest Shackleton and a crew of twenty-seven men set out for the Weddell Sea on the Endurance, a 350-ton ship that had been constructed with funds from private donors, the British government, and the Royal Geographical Society. … But the crew of the Endurance would never reach the continent of Antarctica. Just a few days out of South Georgia Island in the Southern Atlantic, the ship encountered mile after mile of pack ice, and was soon trapped as winter moved in and with furry. Ice closed around the ship “like an almond in a piece of toffee,” a crew member wrote.

Shackleton and his crew were stranded in the Antarctic for ten months as the Endurance drifted slowly north until the pressure of the ice floes crushed the ship. On November 21, 1915, the crew watched as she sank in the frigid waters of the Weddell Sea. …

Stranded on the ice, the crew boarded their three lifeboats and landed on tiny Elephant Island. There Shackleton left behind all but five of his men and embarked on a hazardous journey across 800 miles of rough sea to find help. Which, eventually, they did.

The book's author, Simon Sinek, goes on to talk about how none of the crew died and how there was no mutiny. Then he shares the ad that Shackleton ran to find and hire his crew, and that is what reminded me of women on bedrest facing a high-risk pregnancy:

“Men wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in case of success.”

These men came to the challenge with a certain mindset that I think helped them to power through.

I think an ad for pregnancy bedrest would look something like this:

“Women wanted for anxiety-filled journey. Lost wages, bitter emotions, long months of complete boredom, constant worry. Happiness and healthy baby in case of success.”

I know you didn’t answer a want ad, but there is no one I would rather have on the KeepEmCookin ship than you. You are strong in spirit and mind. You believe in beating the odds. And for months on end, you don’t give up.

Now let's hear some weekly updates!
