What's Your Story? Tell us. / A Happy Birth Story

I have a long overdue birth story to share! But first a recap...I lost my previous pregnancy at 19 weeks and was diagnosed with an incompetent cervix. When I got pregnant this time I had a preventative cerclage placed at 14 weeks. At 26 weeks I was nearly funneled to the stitch and was put on strict bed rest. I stayed this way until my 34 week appointment; my OB checked my cervix and I was 4 cm dilated and she told me that I was having the baby the next day! I was scared and upset that she was in fact going to be born prematurely but my doctor reassured me that I had done all that I possibly could for my baby and my cervix simply could not handle things any longer.

I had to be at the hospital at noon the next day for the c-section. I was definitely feeling contractions at that point, but they were not really painful, I tell this to the nurse and she says not only am I having contractions, but that I was having contractions every 1 to 2 minutes! What?! I was only feeling some of the contractions and I didn't think they were all that bad. This whole labor experience was nothing like I had experienced previously. After the spinal was placed, and before the c-section began, my doctor tried to remove the cerclage but she said I was too far dilated and she couldn't get to it, so I'll have to wait to get it removed during an outpatient procedure.

After 54 days on bed rest, my sweet baby girl was born at 4:08pm on 7/14/11 at 34 weeks+2days, weighing 5 lbs 6 oz, and 18 1/2 inches long!

She spent 2.5 weeks in the NICU. I was beyond thrilled to have her home where I can hold her and have her all to myself, but it's kinda scary to walk away from the security of the hospital NICU.  She has apnea due to her prematurity so she was sent home on a monitor, and will stay on the monitor until her breathing pattern reaches maturity which is around 44 weeks (she's 42 weeks now).

She's such a sweet baby. She loves to just lay on my chest and snuggle...totally my favorite thing to do! I've been trying to sleep when she sleeps, I get nothing done of course but, oh well! I'm exhausted and loving every minute of it. I love her SO much!!
