What's Your Story? Tell us. / Re: Short cervix with twins

Hi all,

I wanted to update you and officially call this a success story!

We made it to 37+5 weeks, and were actually scheduled for an induction the following day because twins do best if born before 38 weeks. These two had their own idea, and I went into labour naturally.

I gave birth to a healthy twin girl (5lbs 9oz) and boy (6lbs 9oz) on March 7th. They each needed just a little help from pediatrics, but no NICU or special nursery time. They stayed in our room with us for 3 nights in the hospital and then we were all sent home :)

I want to give other people hope that everything can turn out okay! The 3 months of 'high risk' pregnancy and bed rest were so so difficult but as soon as it's over it will feel like a distant memory and I wouldn't change a thing to have these two sweet babies here safe and sound.

Thanks for everyone's support <3

Hi all,

I'm 37+2 today with twins, and will be induced on Friday if I don't go into labor before then! It feels so surreal to have made it to this point and I can't believe that we get to meet them so soon!

Don't really know what to do with myself for these last few days, I'm still taking it easy because I don't have energy for much else.

Wishing everyone a good week!

For me, I wish I could respond to my anxious/negative thoughts differently...acknowledge them and then let them go rather than dwelling on them. I'm getting better at this but still requires a lot of effort. This would allow me to be more present and content rather than focusing on the 'what ifs' and constantly worrying about the future. Easier said than done!

Wishing everyone a good week,

Hi Laura,

I'm so sorry for your loss last year. That must have been heartbreaking and I'm sure making this pregnancy even more challenging for you.

Definitely don't lose hope this time around! I have learned that a cervix can be short but strong. My cervix was 1.4cm at 24 weeks (must have shortened sometime between 20-24 weeks) and didn't change at all until 31 weeks where it was down to 0.8cm. Now at 35+5 and still pregnant (we stopped measuring cervix after 32). No cerclage but on progesterone suppositories.

My doctor also didn't advocate for strict bed rest but told me to stop working right away and "take it easy", no lifting or straining. I sort of translated this into modified bed rest because it was easier to communicate to friends and family, and I have remained off my feet as much as possible.

I found the mental/emotional struggle to be the hardest part, and looking back I think I was pretty depressed for the first month at least. I used to write out little words of encouragement to look at every time my anxiety was getting out of control (e.g. "I will be strong and brave for these babies"; "I am grateful for another day still pregnant"). Also tried to accept that whatever was happening biologically in my body was out of my control, and certainly worrying wasn't going to change the course of events. Meditation podcasts and apps have been helpful for me too.

Sending you positive thoughts! There are many short cervix success stories on this forum to give you encouragement! And know that whatever happens you can handle it.

Hi all,

I'm still here, 35+1 today :) Modified bed rest since 24 weeks for short cervix with twins. Starting to realize that regardless of what happens, these babies are going to be here really soon!

I agree, I feel way better when my hair is done and when I've showered/used my favourite body lotion.  I love 'sympathy for the skin' by Lush.  Also went for a pedicure yesterday which was HUGE considering I haven't been able to reach my feet in a long time! I was kind of nervous to go but figured it was about the same amount of walking/sitting as a doctors appointment.

Hope everyone is doing well!

We have no special plans for valentines this year, will just celebrate still being pregnant if that's the case! I think I'll request some chocolate or ice cream but husband is already going above and beyond with daily cooking and taking care of me, and I don't want him to feel any extra pressure!

Hello again,

I just replied to your other post, but our stories sound so similar! I'm also FTM with twins and short cervix diagnosed around the same time (after being completely normal at 20 week scan).

I also got super paranoid about the extra discharge with the suppositories being my water breaking... had my OB check me numerous times! Also get a lot of BH contractions which I have been told is normal with twins but still freaks me out, and I've stayed awake many nights counting period between them. And I also get worried about every gas pain being a contraction and constantly feel my belly to see if it's soft or tightening. So you are absolutely not alone!

When I was first put on bedrest I was very ambitious about how I would spend my time - thought about doing some online courses etc. But for me, I had a lot of anxiety especially during the first month, and what helped pass the time the most was to zone out in front of the TV as it was the best distraction from worrying thoughts. I also did some knitting off and on and we bought a Nintendo switch - I haven't played video games since I was a kid, but it has been pretty good for passing the time! Also having a bit of structure to the day helps, so I move back and forth from my bedroom to the living room couch and alternate 'activities'.

Anyways, I'm still pregnant almost 10 weeks after discovering short cervix. And if I can do it you can too! Now i'm trying to appreciate this time of quiet rest before we have two newborns to take care of!

All the best,

Hi Goldielocks,

Just to give you an update I'm now 33+6 and still pregnant! The last they checked my cervix it was down to 0.8 cm about 2 weeks ago, and now I don't think they'll check it anymore.

I can't believe I've been on bedrest for almost 10 weeks. At the beginning it seemed so impossible to make it this far. But time does keep passing!

I wish you the best and hopefully my story gives you some encouragement that you can stay pregnant for quite some time with a short cervix.

Hi Madison,

They found my cervix was very short (1.4 cm) at 24 weeks and since then it's shortened to 0.8 cm. Now at 33 weeks and still pregnant, never thought we'd make it this far! I've been on modified bed rest at home.

I haven't experienced painful contractions yet, but I know others on the forum have been in and out of hospital with signs of labour and have remained pregnant.

Hang in there!

Hi all,

I've been on bed rest since 24 weeks for short cervix with twins, now we're at 33 weeks!

My mom is planning our baby shower, and she wants to have it after the babies are born so people can also meet the twins. It would definitely be more convenient to have it at our place but it's wayyyy too small, so it will at my parents place about 45 mins away.

Hope everyone is having a good week, we made it to Feb!

Hi Samira,

My story sounds very similar to yours! My cervix was 1.4cm at 24 weeks after being normal at 20 weeks. We were so scared and upset when we found out, I was also put on progesterone and modified bed rest. To give you some hope, I'm now 32+5 weeks and still pregnant!

If they've given you the steroids, I think they can help improve lung function for up to two weeks, although more effective in the first week. The doctors can't know for sure if you will go into labour during this time but they are playing it safe incase you do.

Try to stay positive and know you are doing everything you can!

Hi all,

I'm now 32 weeks with twins! I've been on bed rest at home since 24 weeks for short cervix. 32 weeks was a big milestone for us, next goal is to make it into February and then 34 weeks if possible :) Growth ultrasound and fetal monitoring appointments are scheduled for tomorrow.

tdgdeguz - we stopped purchasing baby things for a while too when the drama all started, but once we hit 30 weeks we started to feel more confident! So I know how you feel.

bed bound and down - hope your appointment goes well on Friday and that you get to stay at home!

I'm 31+1 weeks today, bed rest for short cervix with twins since 24 weeks.

We had another cervix check today and it's gotten even shorter, which isn't great news. But no signs of labour yet so hoping to hang in there for a little while longer.

I completely understand how you feel Babyware - my husband has also been amazing, but I hate having to ask him to do literally everything around the house! And hard not to feel depressed/anxious during all of this.

Hang in there!

That sounds so similar to me and looks like we're only a week apart! I'm sorry to hear you're also going through this but it is comforting to know I'm not alone :)

Great name choice  :)

Also wonderful news from the doctor!
