Making the Best of Bed Rest / Monday Roll Call for June 29, 2020
« on: June 29, 2020 at 08:00 AM »
Welcome to another Monday Roll Call!

I know it can be tough to stay motivated, so I thought it might be good to share the things that brighten your day most. For me, the highlights of bed rest were negative FFN tests, seeing my babies on ultrasound, and having my husband paint my toenails. One night he set up a "romantic" dinner on a card table next to our bed. We called it "dinner on the terrace." What keeps you going?

And as always, let us know how many weeks along you are and if you have any appointments to look forward to this week. If you had any appointments last week or any trips to L&D last week, let us know how those went.

I'm looking forward to your updates! Hope to see you all on the Live Chat on Tuesday.

Keep those babies cookin'!

What's the craziest thing someone has said to you while you've been on bed rest? Here are my faves from my two pregnancies:

1) You're STILL pregnant? Maybe you didn't even need to be on bed rest.
2) I shouldn't say this, but you really remind me of Jabba the Hut.
3) "How are you doing?" ... said by a (male) doctor strolling right into my hospital room and starting up a conversation (and continuing it!) while I was using the bedpan!!!
4) Let me know if you need any help. I can give you the number of my cleaning lady.

I'm sure there were others! Tell me yours!

I hope to see you all on the live chat Thursday!

Music! Take some time today for music.

First, think of a song that has always inspired you, like the theme from Rocky, or "Roar" by Katy Perry, or a favorite workout song. Next, pick a song that will take you to another time and place in your life when you were carefree, young and idealistic. Finally, pick a song that means something special to you and your partner, perhaps a song from your wedding or a song from when you first started dating. Don't underestimate the power that music can have on your mood!

As always, let us know how many weeks along you are and how the past week has been. And, tell us a song that inspires you. Here are a few links to get you started:

"Ain't no Mountain High Enough" by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABfQuZqq8wg
"Fighter" by Christina Aguilera: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PstrAfoMKlc
"Stronger" by Kelly Clarkson: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xn676-fLq7I
"Survivor" by Destiny's Child: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wmc8bQoL-J0
"Happy" by Pharrell Williams: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6Sxv-sUYtM

What songs inspire you?

Also, we have lots of visitors to the Monday Roll Call each week, but very few people posting. KeepEmCookin has the greatest impact when we share and connect. Please take a couple of minutes to register and post. Thank you!

Hi, ladies! How's the weather near you?

Try to find a chance to spend some time outside. For example, while eating a meal (when you'd be sitting up anyway) or reclining on a lounge chair. Do you have any other suggestions on how you can make spending some time outside happen?

I hope you all can join us Thursday at 2 pm Eastern time for the Live Chat. It's always fun, but even more so when we have several moms on. In the meantime...

Hello! Here's something to get the week started with some positive thoughts!

Tell us the most important thing you've learned while on bed rest. It can be philosophical or something practical (like knitting or a craft, or something you read in a book about newborn care) or something silly or fun (like how many animals have blue tongues: bit.ly/1QSkfen)

I'll start. When I was on bed rest, I learned that there is only so much in life you can control. For everything else, you just HAVE to let go.  (I also learned that my husband has NO idea how to fold towels, but he CAN cook.  :D )

Hope to see you all on the live chat on Thursday!

Hello, ladies!

You all are doing the most important job in the world and you deserve all the support you can get!

The last few weeks on the Live Chat have been pretty slow. It would mean a lot to me, and especially the other bed rest moms here, if we could count on more of you to come out. It can be a lot of fun! Please let us know if you will be on the chat on Thursday. :)

Hello, ladies!

Let us know how many weeks along you are and if you have any appointments to look forward to this week. How are your OBs handling your appointments during this time? Are they doing telehealth visits when possible? Or still having you come in for all appointments? Are they scheduling appointments further apart so the waiting room is less crowded? If you had any appointments last week or any trips to L&D last week, let us know how those went.

Hi, Cebert24.

Thank you for sharing your story with us. I can't provide medical advice, by I can say that I have seen progesterone supplementation and reduced activity help many women to go further along in their pregnancies. Tintin makes a great suggestion about asking about a pessary. If it causes too much irritation, it is easily removed. How did your most recent appointment go?

Hi, Deeda.

First, I am so very sorry for the losses you have faced. It is a heavy weight that you are caring and my heart goes out to you.

How did your scan go on Monday? I didn't have a cerclage, but many of of members here have so I'll share what I've learned from them. Oftentimes the cervix does eventually funnel all the way down to the stitch as it get shorter. It is all so scary and stressful, but that is why the stitch is there, knowing that the cervix was going to shorten. I have seen many women have successful pregnancies thanks to a cerclage.

Has your doctor talked to you about progesterone supplementation to help to keep the cervix stable? That's a possibility to ask about. The March of Dimes has a very helpful article about progesterone here: https://www.marchofdimes.org/complications/progesterone-treatment-to-help-prevent-premature-birth.aspx. Also be sure to mention the itching to your doctor, just in case it turns out to be a sign of infection.

You'll be in my thoughts!

“I am extraordinarily patient, provided I get my own way in the end.”
-- Margaret Thatcher

And you will get your own way, ladies! One day at a time...  ;)

Do any of you have a mantra or something you say to yourself to stay motivated during bedrest? For me, my mantra was: "Right now, I am exactly where I am supposed to be." Also, "These weeks (or months) will change the life of my child forever."

Keep 'em cookin',

Happy Monday!

I hope each of you will schedule something today to anticipate. For example:

*Order a new book/movie/game that you have been wanting.
*Set up 3 calls (or FaceTime, Zoom, etc.) to have with friends or family members this week.
*Ask your partner to take care of that thing around the house that has been driving you crazy but you just haven't felt comfortable asking.

Remember that you are an important person doing an important job!  Don't hesitate to ask for the care and attention you need.  :)
