Making the Best of Bed Rest / Monday Roll Call for January 28, 2019
« on: January 28, 2019 at 07:21 AM »
Hi, ladies.

I was remembering a time when I was playing with Batman and Robin figures with my son. He said that he wished that he had a Wonder Woman figure so that I could be her.

Of course, that made me think of all of you! You are Wonder Women, doing everything you can for your babies. And you're also so wonderful for the support you provide each other! Whenever someone's having an especially tough day or week, you all are there. So thank you!

Anybody have any appointments this week?

"I learned that we can do anything, but we can't do everything... at least not at the same time. So think of your priorities not in terms of what activities you do, but when you do them. Timing is everything."
--Dan Millman

And this is your time to cook! Let everything else fall aside ... for now.

So tell me what is new, ladies! What are you looking forward to this week? As always, let us know how many weeks along you are. See you on the Live Chat on Thursday!

Making the Best of Bed Rest / Monday Roll Call for January 14, 2019

How are we two weeks into 2019? I hope it has been moving quickly for you as you head toward the finish line!

There's passage from a book called Start with Why that has stuck with me for a few years now. One example from the book is about an expedition to Antarctica, and it made me think immediately of all the bedrest moms I’ve known.

On December 5, 1914, Ernest Shackleton and a crew of twenty-seven men set out for the Weddell Sea on the Endurance, a 350-ton ship that had been constructed with funds from private donors, the British government, and the Royal Geographical Society. … But the crew of the Endurance would never reach the continent of Antarctica. Just a few days out of South Georgia Island in the Southern Atlantic, the ship encountered mile after mile of pack ice, and was soon trapped as winter moved in and with furry. Ice closed around the ship “like an almond in a piece of toffee,” a crew member wrote.

Shackleton and his crew were stranded in the Antarctic for ten months as the Endurance drifted slowly north until the pressure of the ice floes crushed the ship. On November 21, 1915, the crew watched as she sank in the frigid waters of the Weddell Sea. …

Stranded on the ice, the crew boarded their three lifeboats and landed on tiny Elephant Island. There Shackleton left behind all but five of his men and embarked on a hazardous journey across 800 miles of rough sea to find help. Which, eventually, they did.

The book's author, Simon Sinek, goes on to talk about how none of the crew died and how there was no mutiny. Then he shares the ad that Shackleton ran to find and hire his crew, and that is what reminded me of women on bedrest facing a high-risk pregnancy:

“Men wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in case of success.”

These men came to the challenge with a certain mindset that I think helped them to power through.

I think an ad for pregnancy bedrest would look something like this:

“Women wanted for anxiety-filled journey. Lost wages, bitter emotions, long months of complete boredom, constant worry. Happiness and healthy baby in case of success.”

I know you didn’t answer a want ad, but there is no one I would rather have on the KeepEmCookin ship than you. You are strong in spirit and mind. You believe in beating the odds. And for months on end, you don’t give up.

Now let's hear some weekly updates!

Welcome to another week! Tell us how many weeks along you are, what you have planned for this week, and what your favorite bed rest food is.

I ate a lot of string cheese and nuts when I was on bed rest, and also yogurt that I kept in a small fridge next to my futon on the floor in the living room. I wanted to be where all the action was with my 2-year-old Miss Sunshine. Every day was a party on the floor! Kids are very adaptable, thank goodness!

Looking forward to your updates... and to seeing you on the Live Chat on Thursday. We had the best time last week!

Who's still cookin'? Did any of you worry about having a 2018 baby? You're soooo close to 2019!

Share with us three wonderful things that happened to you this year. I'll start:

1) Publishing "Stuck in Bed" after more than a year and a half of collaboration with my co-author and illustrator.
2) Celebrating my 14th anniversary with my husband, who grows more special to me every year. (And who put up with my craziness during my two pregnancies on bed rest!)
3) My kids finding their passions: drawing anime characters (my daughter) and playing the baritone horn (my son).

I'm looking forward to your weekly updates and what made 2018 special for you.

You've made it another week! Let us know how you're doing ladies!

I know the holidays are an extra difficult time to be on bedrest. You may not be seeing everyone you hoped to see, and you may have to put aside your usual traditions. Try to stay focused on what this extra time cookin' will mean for your baby for the rest of his or her life.

Count your blessings, and even write them down and share them with your partner or a friend. Don't hesitate to ask someone for what you need: a glass of water, another serving of mashed potatoes, a listening ear or a big hug.

Keep 'em cookin',
Angela

P.S. I won't be able to host the Live Chat on Thursday at 2 pm EST/11 am PST as I usually do. If someone would like to host it for me, please let me know and I will post it on Facebook and Twitter.  http://www.keepemcookin.com/live-chat/

Five Ways Prison Is Better than Bed Rest

1) Daily showers
2) One hour of exercise each day
3) Time spent outdoors "in the yard"
4) Spending time with others in similar circumstances
5) Conjugal visits  ;)

I haven’t shared that in a while, so I thought our new members might get a kick out of it!

As always, let us know how many weeks along you are, and what you've been doing to stay busy. Also, take a moment today to connect with another member by responding to her post. Stay connected…

And keep 'em cookin'!

The holiday season is well underway. It's exciting to see time passing, but I know it can be a tough time as friends and family are having holiday parties and are out shopping for gifts. This is a time when it is especially important to invite people over so that you don't feel quite so left out. What do you have planned? Or tell us what you will make a plan to do after reading this message.

I'm looking forward to your updates! It was wonderful to have such a great turnout for the Live Chat last week. Even with the struggles you are all going through, I have to say that we had a lot of fun!

Hello!

Tell us what you're doing to capture the holiday spirit even though you are on bedrest! Listening to special music? Are you shopping online, or having someone do some shopping for you? Are you able to have friends or a leader from your religious community come visit you? And, for those who aren't linked to particular religion, there's always the "Festivus" episode of Seinfeld! https://bit.ly/2riPAj1 Laughter is universal!  ;D

Keep looking forward, mamas!

Hello, my dears.

I HATE to ask for help, just like many of you feel right now. It personally costs me more than $2,000 per year to run KeepEmCookin (for website hosting, website security and continued domain registration).  Your Amazon purchases are a way that I can help meet that goal.

It is Cyber Monday on Amazon, so it seems like the best day to make this request. Whenever you are going to shop on Amazon (not just today), please first click on this link: https://amzn.to/2DKT0T6 or on the ad above on any page. Then shop! When you do, Amazon gives 4% to 6% of the purchase price to Keep 'Em Cookin' and that helps me to keep the forum up and running.

So super mamas, how has the past week been? Who has an appointment this week?

Keep looking forward, mamas!

Making the Best of Bed Rest / Monday Roll Call: Giving Thanks
« on: November 19, 2018 at 07:17 AM »
Hello, ladies!

It is almost Thanksgiving, and you may be feeling a bit down about it. Getting through any holiday while on bedrest can be especially tough when you feel like you're missing out. Instead, try to consider it a marker in the passage of time, getting you even closer to a safe delivery date.

So tell us what you are thankful for. It can be big or small.

Keep looking forward, mamas!
Angela

***We won't have a Live Chat this Thursday, but will be back next week.

Hello, ladies!
You all are doing the most important job in the world and you deserve all the support you can get!

The last couple of weeks on the Live Chat have been pretty slow. It would mean a lot to me, and especially the other bedrest moms here, if we could count on more of you to come out. It can be a lot of fun! Please let us know if you will be on the chat Thursday. :)

Hello, ladies!

For women experiencing a high-risk pregnancy, and particularly those on bedrest, you're so focused on NOT delivering your baby that you may not think much about delivery. I wanted to share this quote on the power of giving birth, and to reassure you that you will be ready whenever the time comes!

“Birth is an opportunity to transcend. To rise above what we are accustomed to, reach deeper inside ourselves than we are familiar with, and to see not only what we are truly made of, but the strength we can access in and through birth.” – author Marcie Macari

I love that!

Question for you all: Would anyone be interested in me starting a private Facebook group? Would you be more inclined to post there instead of here?

Making the Best of Bed Rest / Monday Roll Call AND a Success Story
« on: October 22, 2018 at 07:37 AM »
Success Story!
I'm dedicating today's Roll Call to Jmomma and her incredible success story. She joined the KEC Forum when she was only 19+5 weeks along with a 1.8 cm cervix. She was a very active member and continues to inspire us with her story below, which she sent to me just a few days ago...

I delivered our baby on August 7, at 38+4. He was 6lb9oz, 18 inches long, and everything was perfect, no NICU time at all. I went into labor during the night with contractions that became steady and painful and did not go away. I was so sure they would eventually stop, so I got ready for work in the morning and by the time I was done getting ready, I had to stop and breath through each contraction because they hurt so much. It turns out by the time we got to the hospital, I was complete. I still ended up with a c/s because the doctor was not comfortable with me pushing being that I already had 2 previous c/s. I'm glad I got to experience labor with contractions, and no medication. They hurt so bad, but I realized I could count down from 30 and by the time I got to 1, they would be over and I felt 100% fine until the next one came on. They were much different than the pitocin contractions.

I hope all the "new" mommas stay strong and keep cooking, and the mommas that were due around the time I was are all doing well with their babies!

Congratulations, Jmomma!
