Making the Best of Bed Rest / Roll Call for January 16, 2012
« on: January 16, 2012 at 08:25 AM »
Happy Monday!
I am VERY excited to be attending the launch of the Prematurity Prevention Network, this week in Washington, D.C. Of course I will be sharing any new information I learn, and I plan to make many connections with people who can help our efforts here on KeepEmCookin. The event and the network are being organized by the March of Dimes. You can learn more here: http://www.marchofdimes.com/professionals/medicalresources_pprc.html

So tell me what is new ladies! What are you looking forward to this week? As always, let us know how many weeks along you are.

Also, I will be at the March of Dimes event on Thursday when we have our regularly scheduled chat at noon. Are any of you available to host the chat? It just involves staying in the chat room from noon until 1 in case anyone wants to talk. Any volunteers?

Keep 'em cookin',
Angela

Making the Best of Bed Rest / Monday Roll Call for January 9
« on: January 09, 2012 at 09:05 AM »
Last week was a tough one. I did 6 weeks of bedrest for my daughter and 15 weeks for my son, so I know where you all are coming from when you post about how tough bedrest is. And I always encourage you to persevere, to push through it. Well last week, as many of you know, this Forum was hacked and down for three days. The days went by and the cost of repairing the forum kept growing. Just like when I was on bedrest, I felt defeated. I felt like my life was not in my control. I couldn't shake the feeling of being beaten down.

We have a few advertisers (http://www.measure2besure.com), to whom I'm extremely grateful, but the bulk of the funding for keeping KeepEmCookin.com up and running falls to me personally. The idea of coming up with the money to cover the cost of the Forum repairs actually made me sick to my stomach. I admit, I wallowed for a couple of days, just like it's okay for bedrest moms to have a pity-party now and then. I felt like the universe was against me.

But then I thought about why I started KeepEmCookin. I refuse to believe there isn't a solution--for any problem. We know that bedrest, cerclages, tocolytics and progesterone can help to prevent preterm birth. There are no guarantees, but we can fight the problem. Same thing with the forum. I'm working with my web design firm to make sure we don't get hacked again. There are no guarantees, but darn it, I'll fight. It doesn't change what has already happened, but I can change my approach and my attitude.

Making the Best of Bed Rest / Endurance: A motivational message
« on: January 02, 2012 at 09:14 AM »
I just finished a book by Simon Sinek called “Start with Why.” It’s about how great leaders and great companies have a “why” at the root of everything they do. There was an example he gave about how to find the people who believe what you believe, because those are the people who will believe in your “why” and support your larger goal. Something about the example of an expedition to Antarctica made me think immediately of all the bedrest moms I’ve known and ever will know. Take a look at this excerpt, and let me know what you think!

“On December 5, 1914, Ernest Shackleton and a crew of twenty-seven men set out for the Weddell Sea on the Endurance, a 350-ton ship that had been constructed with funds from private donors, the British government and the Royal Geographical Society. … But the crew of the Endurance would never reach the continent of Antarctica. Just a few days out of South Georgia Island in the Southern Atlantic, the ship encountered mile after mile of pack ice, and was soon trapped as winter moved in and with furry. Ice closed around the ship “like an almond in a piece of toffee,” a crew member wrote.

Shackleton and his crew were stranded in the Antarctic for ten months as the Endurance drifted slowly north, until the pressure of the ice floes crushed the finally ship. On November 21, 1915, the crew watched as she sank in the frigid waters of the Weddell Sea. …

Stranded on the ice, the crew boarded their three lifeboats and landed on tiny Elephant Island. There Shackleton left behind all but five of his men and embarked on a hazardous journey across 800 miles of rough sea to find help. Which, eventually, they did.”

The author goes on to talk about how none of the crew died and how there was no mutiny. Then he shares the ad that Shackleton ran to find and hire his crew, and that is what reminded me of women on bedrest facing a high-risk pregnancy:

“Men wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in case of success.”

I think an ad for pregnancy bedrest would look something like this:

“Women wanted for anxious journey. Lost wages, bitter emotions, long months of complete boredom, constant worry, positive outcome unexpected but possible. Happiness and parenthood in case of success.”

I know you didn’t answer a want ad, but there is no one I would rather have on the KeepEmCookin ship than you. You are strong in spirit and mind. You believe in beating the odds. And for months on end, you don’t give up.

Keep 'em cookin’ mamas! And when you can, please share our positive and proactive message with others. Together we can reduce the risk of preterm birth.

Making the Best of Bed Rest / Happy New Year! Roll Call for Jan. 2, 2012
« on: January 02, 2012 at 09:13 AM »
Happy new year! Not just another week down, but a new year. Who thought they'd be having their babies in 2011 and didn't? Did we have any deliveries last week? Let us know what else is new!

Also, PLEASE read the post called "Endurance." I read a passage in a book recently and it made me think of all of you moms on bedrest and our honored bedrest graduates.

Making the Best of Bed Rest / Monday Roll Call for December 26
« on: December 26, 2011 at 09:55 AM »
So ladies, what did you do to make the most of the holiday weekend? Did you spend some time with someone you love? Someone who makes you laugh? Share a highlight with us!

My highlight of the weekend was that my husband and I seemed to look at each other more, which is something I've forgotten to do as much since we've had kids. Sure, we were usually looking at each other in response to something the kids had done, but it was so nice to share a smile. Ask your partner to join you on bedrest now and then so you can stay connected!   :)

Making the Best of Bed Rest / Monday Roll Call for December 19th
« on: December 19, 2011 at 08:20 AM »
Happy Monday!
I know we had at least one delivery last week! Congrats to HollyRN and Baby Lucas!  And for all those who are still cookin', let us know how you're doing.

With Christmas six days away and Hanukkah starting tomorrow, this may be an emotional time and a difficult time if you're not where you'd ideally like to be or are missing special friends and family. Just try to remember, right now, YOU ARE EXACTLY WHERE YOU NEED TO BE. You are where you need to be to keep your baby (or babies) safe, and if you are dealing with your own health issues then you are doing all you can to keep yourself safe too. Stay positive, mamas!

Who's still cookin'? Any deliveries last week?

What do you ladies have planned for this week to help pass the time?

Also, if you have any shopping to do on Amazon, please click the Kindle Fire link at the top of any page to get to the Amazon website. When you do, Amazon will give 6% of the purchase price of whatever you buy to KeepEmCookin. KeepEmCookin is self-funded, meaning I pay for hosting and maintaining this site out of my own pocket. I'm happy to do it, of course, but every contribution helps!

Making the Best of Bed Rest / Monday Roll Cal for Dec. 5
« on: December 05, 2011 at 11:48 AM »
Be honest. Who didn't think they'd make it to December? And here we are!

Tell us what you're doing to capture the holiday spirit even though you are on bedrest! Can you or will you be able to see a tree or a menorah from where you are? Listening to special music? Are you shopping online, or having someone do some shopping for you? Are you able to have friends or a leader from your religious community come visit you? And, for those who aren't linked to particular religion, there's always the "Festivus" episode of Seinfeld! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dS7-jcsB_WQ Laughter is universal! ;D

Any deliveries last week? And for those who are still cookin', let us know how many weeks you are.

This survey looks at your attitudes and preconceptions about high-risk pregnancy. It has the potential to help the Preeclampsia Foundation develop a longer future study that may affect how and when women receive treatment for preeclampsia. Thank you!

Hi, ladies!

Let us know how many weeks along you are and if anything has changed since last week! Any appointments to look forward to this week?

Also, we'll be in the Chat Room tomorrow at 2, as always. On Thursday at noon, we'll be in the Chat Room with Liz Bland from Stork Support (http://www.storksupport.com). Liz is a Licensed Social Worker and will be talking with us about bedrest coping strategies and stress reduction. Toward the end of the chat, Liz will walk us through an origami (http://www.origami.com/gallery.html) exercise that can help create a feeling of calm. We'll be making a stork!

One more thing, this is the time of year where I actively seek funding for KeepEmCookin.com for the following year. The main way I do that is through Amazon. Amazon will give 6% of your purchase price to KeepEmCookin to help pay web hosting fees for this forum. Please click on the Amazon advertisement above when you are ready to shop, and support our outreach to moms like you. Thanks!

Making the Best of Bed Rest / Roll Call! Monday November 21
« on: November 21, 2011 at 10:07 AM »
Hello!

With Thanksgiving just a few days away here in the U.S., I thought it would be fun to share what makes us feel most thankful. Our UK, Canadian and Australian moms are welcome to join in too! I'll start.

I'm most thankful for my daughter and son, who I managed to keep cookin' until 39 weeks though they tried their hardest to be preemies. They are healthy and loving and I couldn't ask for anything more. I'm also especially thankful for my husband, who puts up with my crazy work schedule and my mood swings.  I'm thankful for my big family and their good health and good fortune. Finally, I'm thankful for all you wonderful moms who support each other with your posts and by sharing your experiences.

How about you?

Keep 'em cookin',
Angela

So ladies, what did you do to make the most of your weekend? Did you spend some time with someone you love? Someone who makes you laugh? Don't let yourself become isolated on bedrest. People may not be sure how to help, and they may think they're bothering you. Be specific. Ask a friend to bring you lunch from your favorite take-out place. Invite another couple to join you for dinner after work--something simple like pasta. It is SO important to stay connected.

I'm glad you're here!

Welcome to another week, supermoms!

So give us an update. How many weeks are you? Any appointments this week? What are you looking forward to?

Happy Halloween!

If you like to be scared, be sure to check out our Book of the Day: http://www.keepemcookin.com/bedrest.aspx. I read it when I was 11 years old and the thought of it still freaks me out! And if you'd rather see other everyday people looking scared, check out the Idea of the Day for photos of people at a Haunted House attraction in Niagara Falls: http://www.keepemcookin.com/bedrest.aspx It's actually pretty funny.

How is everyone doing this week? What are you looking forward to?

Did everyone see Jenamie's newborn pix of Shepard Alexander? http://forum.keepemcookin.com/index.php?topic=2120.0 He's one week old today!
