Bedrest or no?
« on: September 21, 2011 at 09:09 AM »
HI all! I was wondering who was on bedrest for their IC and who was not.  There are so many opinions out there!  I like to hear different perspectives!  Thanks!

I am 20 weeks and am not on bedrest as of now.  I do have 2 cerclages but they are very  low (6mm under my cerclage).  I was last measuring 3.5 at 18.5 weeks.  I rest alot during the day and have taken the year off work.  Please share your experience with me :)

Hi Wendy,

Had an emergent cerclage placed at 18w4d and have been on strict bedrest since then (I am now 27w5d!).  They put my cerclage in at 1.9cm and so far its been holding at that measurement.  I only leave the house to go to my biweekly ultrasounds and doctor's appointments.  Only up to eat and use the bathroom.  My docs have told me at 24 weeks that I can get up and do a little more (modified bed rest?), but out of paranoia, my hubby and I decided to just keep me on self presecribed "strict" bedrest.

I don't have any other kids (except a fur baby/puppy!) and a great hubby, so my situation allows to be on full, out, horizontal bedrest most of the time.

Bedrest on July 14, 2011  (17 weeks)for incompetent cervix and cerclage.
Off bedrest on November 8, 2011 (34 weeks)
Mom to beautiful baby girl Amélie born on November 22, 2011 (36 +4)

Hi Wendy,
I had a rescue cerclage placed at 17 weeks (twin gestation, cervical length 0.6cm, 2cm dilated) and have been on strict bedrest ever since (29w 1d).  My cervix has shortened since the cerclage (3cm after placement down to 2.4cm, then to 1.8 cm, then we stopped checking) and I truly believe bedrest has allowed us to get this far.  My doc is very strict (only up to use bathroom, shower 1x/wk), but it has worked so I'll take it.  I guess logically it does make sense that the less pressure put on the cervix, the better.

Hi Wendy,

Like Sunny, my cercalge was also placed in an emergency situation at 21 weeks when my cervix shortened from 2.2 cm to 1.2 cm after a week of bed rest alone.  I have been on strict bed rest ever since and am now 32w1d.  Since the cerclage the most my cervix ever measured was 2.4 cm and the lowest 1.2 cm, however, for the most part it measures between 1.5-1.7 cm at each appt.  I figure better safe than sorry and adhere to strict bed rest even though my doctor has given me the freedom to move around the house, make meals, do dishes etc., unless i get too many contractions with any activity.  I figure the strict bed rest has worked this far and for me I need to know i did everything to keep my babies in as long as possible.  If i decided to do a more modified bed rest and i went into early labour i would always wonder if it could have been prevented with less activity - and i don't want to have to have that question in my mind.  For me it brings peace of mind that i am doing all that i can in my power to stay pregnant as long as possible!
Natural boy/girl twins!!
EDD November 1, 2011 (based on 38 weeks)
Bed rest at 20 weeks for cervical shortening
Cerclage placed at 21 weeks after further shortening
13 weeks and 1 day of strict bed rest and Mario and Amelia made their appearance at 33 weeks and 4 days on October 1, 2011!

I was in Korea stationed there(military wife) and the Korean doctors recommended hospitalization from 20 weeks to delivery. I have a 1 yr old so they said I could go home. The Military hospital absolutely was no help so I'm glad I also have this amazing site and amazing group of doula's there or I would have been screwed! I was put on permanent bedrest with IC at 20 weeks and my measurment was 2.2. They do not do cerclages unless emergency like you go into labor. I ordered the doctors to give me progesterone shots as well and surprisingly they did! At 27 weeks my cervix was a 3.3 so the progesterone with the bedrest worked amazing! They took me off progesterone we got transferred to the states to a specialist. When I arrived in country I ended up in the ER again in L&D thinking they were smart she said I was fine didn't have to be on bedrest and even did a pelvic exam we fought about that is a NO NO! The specialist put me right back on bedrest and progesterone because it was going back down again and I started having cramps. So glad I got a specialist with that L&D doctor I would have had him in a week she even said we could have sex good thing we didn't chance that!! I'm 35 weeks now my first son was born around this time but we didn't know I had this problem. The baby is so low and it hurts for me to do anything so I can barely take showers or go to the bathroom at this point. I had a nanny is Korea and I have great family taking care of us now. Bedrest does work! I feel horrible when I have to go to the doctors. Make sure to stretch though because man I have no muscles left! I've been on bedrest going on 5 months!!! Now my son is 16 months old the first one and I've had to train everyone to take care of him lol! Can't wait to have this baby born so I can get up and walk around!! 2 more weeks til I'm super safe!
