Hi Twins - yeah I've had plenty of braxton hicks in my 13 weeks since my cerclage.  None of them so far have affected my cervix, although that was also my worry.  I also had a ton of "twitches" and things like that too - my little guy is head down and his arms are always around his head, so I just joke that he's trying to claw his way out.  Before this time though (when I was really worried about the twitches) I always called my OB nurse and mentioned it at my appointments - or went in for a check on non-scheduled days when I was really worried.  The fact that you are going to a Peri is a good thing.  They are the specialists in this area.  Just write down ALL of your questions for your appointment and make sure you get the time to ask them all.  That's what those docs are for.

We also did a ton of online research after my initial appointment that diagnosed my short cervix and funneling.  I had no idea what any of it was and even though this is my 4th pregnancy - I had never experienced anything like this time and felt like a first time mom again.  You will freak out once in a while.  Cry as much as you need.  It's a scary time and unpredictable, but just remember that you caught your condition early enough that they have plenty of things to help you get to the end.  :)

3 weeks total before the cerclage placement.  During those three weeks I had four ultrasounds - 2 with my OB and 2 with the peri.  BUT, the way I understand it they will not do cerclages past 23-24 weeks.  I had the cerclage placed at 22 weeks and 4 days.  I was monitored for pre-term labor at the hospital prior to the cerclage since a cerclage is not the answer for pre term labor.  I only had a couple of contractions over the course of 8 hours - so I was diagnosed with an incompetent cervix.  We don't really know what is going on because I carried my previous pregnancy full term.   Is this your first pregnancy?  I am so thankful for ultrasound techs that pay attention to little details!

As far as contractions, I still have one or two contractions throughout the course of the day but they are not painful or regular.  The plan for me is to call my doctor if I have four contractions in one hour.  I have made use of the after hours phone number to ask about weird pains.  Don't be afraid to ask questions!

amy,

this is my first pregnancy.  Did the doctor give you any odds or stastics on what to espect as far as outcomes go?

Hi Twins-

I am 16 weeks and 6 days with twin girls.  At 13 weeks I started cramping and bleeding.  I saw my OB the next day and I had an incompetent cervix that was opening up and placenta previa.  I was scared to death.  I had a cerclage placed that day and have been on strict bedrest since then.  My cervix was 2.7 cm last Thursday which is up from 2.3.

I remember feeling exactly what you are feeling.  I was so scared of losing these babies that I couldn't sleep or eat.  My husband and I had tried for 3 years to get pregnant and it took 4 rounds of IVF.

You can do this, I swear!  Ask your doc about a cerclage but I know there are some ladies here who just went on bedrest for a shortened cervix and never needed one.  Take it one day at a time and this board is a great source of encouragement and success stories.

It has been 4 weeks since that scare and I still have days when I am freaking out.  I just stay horizontal and know that I am doing everything I can do for my babies.

Please update on your appt when you can.

Jessica

Hey twins. I was originally pregnant with twins, so I was not a candidate for a cerclage. Most women that are/have been pregnant with twins that I have talked to have not been candidates for a cerclage because of that. I don't know why women that are pregnant with twins aren't candidates. It won't hurt to ask your doctor about it though.
On bedrest for 26 weeks, Linnea Rose Thyme Manchester born 08/05/11.

I'm so sorry you didn't get better news at your appt.  Do they have you on bedrest still?  The best thing to do now is rest, stay hydrated and rest some more.  Sending prayers and good thoughts your way!

Hi Twins - thanks for the update.  I was wondering what was going on with you today and what you would find out.  Shortening cervix is not a fun thing to have happen, but I'm glad you were a candidate for the cerclage.  I think that and bedrest has gotten me to where I am today.  Are you in the hospital or did they let you go home already?  I was down to a 1.4 the day they did my cerclage.  I was shocked it was getting worse, but also was relieved that they said they would do a cerclage.  Keep us posted on what's going on.

Hi Lori,

I went home the same day of the surgery.  I float between being terrified and hope that this may work.  I am so scared - i wish they did it last week when i had more cervix to work with. I am terrified of my water breaking and PTL.  What did your doctor think was the prognosis as far as weeks go with you?

My doc never really told me how far he thought I'd get.  I kept asking but all he would say is just go another 2 weeks and them we'll go from there.  I think he was trying to be optimistic for me.  It seems dreadful right now cause you're probably saying "I'm only 21 weeks" but once you get a few weeks farther-it will seem less hopeless.  I was scared to death of the uncertainty.  I'm a planner so this whole situation sent me through the roof!  Feeling scared, sad, mad is all part of this journey.  It will get better. Do you still keep seeing the Peri from now on?  I saw mine for a followup appt a week or so after my cerclage but then I was handed back to my reg OB.  Hopefully they will measure you again in a week or two to see how the cerclage is doing.

One thing that was good for me was my hubby printed out blank calendar pages for me for the months I had left.  Those give me a visual of where I am as far as days on bedrest. Each day I would cross one off and it felt like I was accomplishing something.  And it helped me remember what day it was!  We also added the milestones-marking weeks pregnant on there so I could feel good that I made it another week farther.  Try to keep busy is the best thing right now.  And the hubby finally learning to do laundry doesn't hurt either!  :). Hang in there!!
