Well. After last Thursday's appt showed repeated shortening of my cervix down to 2.6 my Dr. showed much concern. I was sent to the Peri on Friday and initially they measured my cervix at 4.9 untill the tech realized that I was contracting and they were measuring contracted uterus as well as cervix. It was measured at 3.3. I was started on prometrium daily used vaginally. I haven't noticed much of a difference in the contracting since starting the medication. I will still be getting the progesterone shots and taking the nifedipine every 8 hours.

My dad gave me some advice that I wanted to share with you all as it may make alot of sence to someone else as well. He pointed out that I seem to do better when I know that there is another option or possibility to fight for or towards. I made sure to get a referrall to a different peri prior to going to my appt on Friday so that if by chance he gave us the same there is nothing we can do this doesn't happen line of bull that we recieved from his collegue the week prior we could go ahead and call and get in with this other Dr.

I am very interested to know if there is a state by state list of the top perinatal specialists/hospitals. We live in a very small town but have decided that if needed we are willing to go to a hospital that sees a higher volume of patients in order to recieve the best possible chance for our child.

Have any of you ever wondered as well if a wrongly estimated date could mean the difference between every effort being made and no effort being made? I mean If going by my lmp I would be 24 weeks along but since they measured greater than a one week difference they changed the dates and according to the adjusted date I am 21 weeks.

Hope this is a great week of continued cooking for all!

Thursday I went to a Dr. Appointment out of town where the threat of not being allowed to go home from the hospital was looming over my head. My cervix is funneling and the closed part is at 5 mm. I'm at 28 weeks. They let me come home due to no contractions and I'm not dilating. I came home even more confused because the peri didn't even know I have been on bed rest for a month. They seemed perplexed that my Dr. had done that. They did tell me though that I have a 75% chance of making it to 32 weeks!!! I woke up this morning to the phone ringing and it was my regular ob. She said that as of today I don't have to go get my weekly ultrasound to measure my cervix. I do have to continue the weekly shots of progesterone and also, they switched me from strict bed rest to moderate. I'm very excited by all the good news. I hope everyones week is starting out as great as mine.

I am still on bed rest - can't remember now if its 9 or 10 weeks.  I am now 32 +2 and was finally allowed to go home after being in the hospital for 8 LONG weeks!!  The situation with my cervix has not changed at all, the length varies from about 5mm to 1cm and there is still funnelling.  I am so happy to be back at home with my family, its like bed rest isn't that big of a deal anymore - I just hope that I can be strict with myself because if something happens and I get re-hospitalized I think it will be so hard on my son.  I have been told to continue the prometrium until I am 34 weeks and then I can stop. I continue to get bad menstrual like cramping with back pain throughout the day, but so far it has not caused me to dilate at all.  I also have significant pelvic pressure which i attribute to the fact that I am carrying twins (and baby a's head is engaged now). At this point i am so happy that i have made it to 32 weeks because it never seemed possible 9 weeks ago.  My next big goal is 34 weeks!!

30w2d -- so eager to make it to 32!  been having more vaginal pain and notice my contractions increase as i near my next dose of procardia.

when i met with my doctor last week, she expressed her desire to continue with TVUs, not sure why?  i was told last time that there wasn't much left to measure, and i don't like to see that horrifying image of funneling and bulging membranes on the screen :/

books... just about finished with "Heaven is Here" by Stephanie Nielson; it's her autobiography.  i read a brief synopsis of her story in an issue of People magazine - she was severely burned in a plane crash with her husband and his pilot instructor.  her book chronicles her life pre-accident and post-accident and is both tragic and inspirational.  good read.

I've been a lurker more than anything but maybe I'm now a story of hope for folks, though I haven't delivered yet, so I think I should share.

Current status: tomorrow will be 38 weeks.  I'm off bedrest as of last week.  No one thought I'd last more than a few days aster getting up but, after 14 weeks of varying levels of home bedrest, with dynamic changes to my cervix, a positive fFN at 28 weeks, a previous pre-term birth (my older son was born at 33 weeks after 10 weeks of bedrest with similar symptoms, in and out of the hospital) full effacement by 29 weeks and daily bouts of "real" contractions, here I am at full term and wishing my new little guy would hurry up already!

This time I had vaginal and injectable progesterone from 16 and 24 weeks respectively.   I have no idea what is going to happen with my job when I ask for time to be with the baby once he arrives but I am so thrilled to have gotten him to term.  I may even get to be handed him as soon as he's born which will be icing on the cake.

Bed rest was excruciating.  Mentally and physically it's the hardest thing I've ever done but with this so-far result, I barely feel the effects of it anymore.  Good luck mamas!  Keep 'em cooking!

Son # 1, born at 33 weeks 2 days after 10 weeks bedrest for preterm labor and short cervix.

Son #2, due June 5, 2012.  Bed rest for preterm labor and short cervix since 23 weeks.

26+2 today, next appointment isn't until tomorrow, so nothing new there.  I've finished 7 weeks of bedrest and they're planning on another 8 weeks, so almost halfway!  The past week's been hard; we have 2 different sets of friends in town that I've only been able to see limitedly and have missed out on so much; Sea World, the Zoo, a birthday party, Disneyland; next week I'm missing out on even more; a wedding, a baby shower, and 2 birthday parties.  I know in the long run it's much better to be where I am and to keep him cookin' as long as possible, but it's definately hard when there is so much going on right now that I can't go to.

Currently at 30+1. In hospital for over 7 weeks now, strict bed rest. Before that at home for 4 weeks on moderate bed rest. Amazing how day after day adds to so many weeks. My goal was to hit the 30 and that is done. A lot of pressure off already. Now aiming for 32, then 34.

The kiddo twins do alright.
Current procedure: 3 x Nifedipin, once a day a cardiotoco and a weekly ultrasound.

I am noticing that all this bed rest aka non-movement is starting to getting tough on me. The additional hospital environment adds to it. On top of that I do not sleep well at night, mostly awake with restless legs. Now with hitting the 30 there is light at the end of the tunnel. Patience, bed rest and support helped me big time to get where I am, I think. Amazing what a person is capable of doing and to read that there are so many other women going through the same.

As on books, I recommend "Wild" from Cheryl Strayed. She writes about her eleven hundred mile solo hike on the Pacific Crest Trail. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker and had experienced already rough times in her life, so this hike turns into a lot more than just a simple journey. She has a goal, she fights, she hopes, I enjoyed reading this book, because a lot of it I could adapt to my own situation in bed. Although a contradictory situation, she walks, I rest, it is very similar. Wish my english would be better to explain what I mean. Well, check it out.

Hello ladies ! I am currently 29w4d and going into my 13th week of bedrest !  :o At last Tuesday's appt, my doc told me my cervix was measuring around 1.9 (down from about 2.2) and that I had dialated to about 1cm. He also did a FFN that day and it came back negative, which gives me hope. He admitted me and I did a 48 hr. dose of magnesium and antibiotics. I had an ultrasound and baby looked good. They also kept me on the monitor a good bit and it never picked up any contractions. They checked my cervix again on Friday morning and everything was still the same so I was allowed to come home. I have an appt tomorrow with my regular ob and also with my specialist. I'm praying for good news ! I have 2 young boys so it is so extremely hard to be away from them. It is even harder to watch my family do soooo many things for me. I know they have to be worn out but they don't complain. Friday I will be 30 weeks. Once I get there I will be looking forward to 32, then 34 and so on. How awesome it would be to get to 36 ! Hope everyone gets good news this week, STAY POSITIVE LADIES !  :)

Late again!

35 weeks 3 days!

We had an EXTREME stress day yesterday... I have not been officially taken off bed rest but I had no choice yesterday... My husband and I fought for most of the day over something stupid (I blame hormones, hehe) and then we finally stopped and got along and we get a call about his grandpa who is like a father to him. He had a second massive heart attack on his front porch mid sentence while visiting with 2 of his kids and his wife... It's absolutely amazing how life works... We got home after everything and I laid on the couch and was having regular contractions. Waited an hour or so and they just kept getting stronger and horrible! Since I'm already dilated to 5 we got the kids back up and brought them to Grandma's and went to the hospital. At 35 weeks they won't do anything to induce labor or stop it so after the contractions slowed we were sent home! Doing much better today, only one strong contraction so far but my husband isn't here so I am taking care of my daughter who is SO grumpy! Oh well, we will deal with it! Now my only problem is trying to figure out how to be the wife of a man who just lost the most important man in his life =( All while trying to make the arrival of my new baby girl a happy occasion...
Child #1: Born at 35 weeks, heatlhy
Child #2: Born at 34 weeks, healthy
Child #3: Short Cervix at 21 weeks, strict bedrest for 3 months, 7 weeks of which were hospitalized, dilated to 5 at 28 weeks, baby born at 37 weeks and perfect =)

Hello and congrats to all holding on!!!
My son Eli was born today (monday 21st) at 37+4 after 14 weeks on bed rest. He is a great little boy who screamed alot at delivery and weighted over 3.5 kg for 51 cm to our great surprise as our first born was 49 cm and 3 kg arriving at 38+ weeks.
Eli is the exact copy of his older brother except for the hair color... We are so happy for this Happy Ending, the road to this was long and very bumpy.
hugs to all the Mammas still cooking
Boy no1: 38+6 natural birth uneventful pregnancy
Boy no2: 37+4 c-section after 14 weeks of bedrest due to bleeding previa

36w3d :) but only 35w if you go by my lmp ??? I'm taking myself off strict bedrest this weekend. I don't know how anyone can hold a book and turn pages for very long while lying on their side, (i only read 1 book since on bedrest, it was boring and wish i hadn't bothered haha)  i spend most time reading t news and stuff on t internet and replying to emails on my mobile phone. Maybe i've been too strict... But for people and doctors who are still debating if bedrest works, i have to say i got this far on bedrest and progesterone pessaries only - if anything i wonder how much difference t progesterone made, since i was doing t treatment for about a month before i went on strict bedrest and t progesterone didn't seem to make any difference. It's been interesting to read about all t different bedrest approaches (sounds like a lot of people spend a lot of time on their feet!) and t different treatments everyone has been offered.
first pregnancy, IC - due to Lletz in 2010?
progesterone pessaries since wk 22 - cervix 1.6cm
bedarrest since wk 24 - cervix measure 1.4cm
hospital strict bedarrest at wk 26 - cervix 8mm
back at home, strick bedarrest since week 28 - cervix 1cm
cervix dilated 2cm at week 35

Still here, checking in late. 26+3 now, bed rest since 13.5. Long road, but every day- every week is important.
Last dr appointment was on Friday- I go to my specialist practically every Friday. At that time, contractions were under very good control and continue to be so. Baby is looking great, and was so active it took the doc 3-4 tries to get a good measure of chord blood flow with doppler. That was normal. I have funnelling down to the cerclage stitches even when not contracting (last week it was only when contracting and would resolve when the uterus was relaxed). The funneling stops at the stitches, even when there is pressure, and my cervix is still measuring at 2.1cm. Fully closed tight still, so that is good.
This friday's appointment will have another full ultrasound to measure baby, and make sure there are no early signs of IUGR.
Still on nifedepine every 6 hours, progesterone injections every week, and strict bed rest.
