preeclampsia X 3?
« on: February 09, 2010 at 09:29 PM »
My 1st pregnancy ended in April of '99 with a little girl, born by emergency c-section at 30 weeks.  She was 2 lbs, 5 ozs. and remained in NICU for 1 1/2 months.  When she came home, she still only weighed 4 lbs, 4 ozs. and had to be on a heart monitor.  The culprit?  Severe preeclampsia.  I had gone in to my midwife for a regular checkup at around 28-29 weeks and she immediately admitted me to the hospital.  I had extremely high blood pressure and protein in my urine, neither of which were present 4 weeks before.  They immediately gave me steroid shots to pump up her lungs and assigned me a high-risk doctor.  I was on bedrest in the hospital for 1 week and swelled up like a balloon.  My labwork came back unsatisfactory, indicating possible kidney failure, and that was it.  I had to have her immediately.  It was a difficult recovery for me because of the extreme swelling and it took quite some time to bring my blood pressure back down.  My little gal was sick a lot her 1st year or so, and has had some seasonal athsma since then, but is now 10 and is a gymnastics star!!!  My 2nd pregnancy was monitored more closely because they knew I was high-risk from the beginning.  I did make it a bit farther with her- this emergency c-section occurred at 36 weeks.  That's considered full term, and she didn't have to stay in the hospital, but the high blood pressure had started restricting her growth.  She was born 5 lbs, 4 ozs.  I had been on bed rest for less than 2 months with my doctor constantly threatening to put me in the hospital if I didn't stay laying down.  This was difficult for me because I had a 2 year old at home and I was by myself with her all day while my hubby was working.  Anyway, again it was preelampsia.  This little lady was born in December 2001.  She has been healthy and is now a martial arts champ at 8!  We made a decision not to have any more children-my body doesn't cooperate.  Surprise!  Here I am, on bedrest at 24 weeks with my boy. I'm showing all the signs, only earlier.   God remains in control! :)

Bless your heart.

It's so hard when they know so little. Pre-eclampsia may have genetic causes, but they just don't know. You are doing the best you can. Good luck with this pregnancy! You're doing the right thing by going on bed rest.
