FTM- on bed rest at 25 weeks...
« on: October 29, 2015 at 03:59 PM »
This is my first pregnancy and I have had a ton of curve balls and minor complications that are adding up.  At 20 weeks, I was sent to the neonatal specialist for an ultrasound, and she found that I have a septum in my uterus.  She told me to prepare for a smaller baby, and possibly a preemie.  My husband and I started stock piling and getting ready for baby.  I had another appointment at 24 weeks and 5 days, and although the septum isn't a factor any more, my cervix has shortened to 1.8cm.

Dr. put me off work immediately, and restricted activity, taking progesterone vaginally.  I was not taking this seriously at first, however when she told me that when the cervix gets to 1.5cm she admits her patients to the hospital for complete bed rest, and starts a round of steroid treatment for baby's lungs.  This is when I understood the severity of this.

So here I lay, spending time with positive thoughts and envisioning my cervix lengthening and becoming stronger.  Has anyone had experience with their cervix lengthening after these treatments?
I am determined to keep baby cooking for as long as possible.  Bed rest might drive me bonkers, but am glad that there is a community out there for support.
Good luck to all of you while you are on your pregnancy journeys!

kgkane-

Welcome to this forum! I hope you find it as helpful as I have.
I too am a FTM I have been on strict bed rest since 19.5 weeks- today I am 31 weeks. Bed rest is VERY hard, it is draining physically, emotionally, and financially. The first couple of weeks on bed rest are definitely the hardest so hang in there.
What I find has helped me immensely is having a routine. It has really kept me from going insane- although I do have my moments.

I went into preterm labor @ 19.5 weeks, luckily it stopped naturally however my cervix funneled down to just 1.03cm.  I was scared out of my mind, my doctor didn't think I'd make it to 23 weeks. They aren't even sure what caused the preterm labor. But alas, I was put on strict bed rest with the plan to go on hospital bed rest at 23 weeks. I am very grateful that my cervix did improve and stabilized so I was able to avoid hospital bed rest. A week after the 1.03cm measurement my cervix was 1.69, the week after that 3.2 but when pressure was applied it funneled down to 2.3 - after that week there was no more funneling and my cervix has been stabilized and lengthened since. Even though my cervix is doing so much better my drs. still have me on strict bed rest until 36 weeks

I am convinced that pray, bed rest, staying super hydrated (drinking @ least a gallon of water/ day), and take the progesterone suppositories are what got me this far.

It is super tough but hang in there momma ! You are already at 25 weeks which is great.

Hey there! I'm a FTM and I also have a uterine anomaly, mine is uterus didelphys! I have two (half sized) completely separate uteruses, each with it's own cervix, and a vaginal septum. I've been watched closely the whole pregnancy and everything was great until my cervix shortened dramatically at 22 weeks! It went from 4 to 2.2 in a month. It's at 1.4 now though and has stayed that way for almost 3 weeks with progesterone and bed rest. I'm now at almost 28 weeks. Tomorrow is my next check up and we will see how its going. Definitely take the bed rest seriously, it makes a difference! There are so many amazing success stories here that are so encouraging on the bad days. Get ready for a rollercoaster ride, bed rest takes people by surprise! But hang in there, we have an awesome group here and we are here for you. Keep us updated!

Congrats on the 28 week mark!  This is my first goal.... 28 weeks and then 32.  Good luck with your check up, I hope that everything goes well.  I love reading all the successful stories and am settling in moving from the couch to the bed.  I've got a good list of questions now to ask my Doctor on Tuesday, where as before when she told me about the cervix issue I was speechless and didn't know what to say or ask.
In fact, my notes that I took are ridiculous, and say no vacuum, no sex and feet up.  Now I feel a little more educated about the subject and can ask some relevant questions.

Thanks all for responding, hoping to keep this baby cooking for many many more weeks!

Had my cervix measured again today, and it has lengthened!!!! I am up to 2.7 cm with pressure on my cervix.  The neonatal doctor said that they originally though I had an incompetent cervix, however now she says it's a dynamic cervix that will shorten and lengthen with different amounts of pressure.  They said for me to stay on strict bed rest until I hit 28 weeks, and then I can maybe go to the movies, or to the store!!! Feeling very good and staying positive!  Bed rest is not a vacation....but it does make a difference!!!! Hang in there girls......it's gotta be worth it in the end.

kgkane, I just saw your update, that is awesome!! 2.7 is a good solid number! I also have a dynamic cervix but unfortunately mine shortens spontaneously, no pressure has to be added. Weird, I know, every tech so far has at the screen like "what!?"

You are SO close to that 28 weeks mark. Hang in there and keep us updated! Will you be rechecked before 28 weeks?

Thanks so much   Kmuss I am getting checked every week to see how it's going. I had envisioned and positively predicted a length of 1.9 so was blown away when they told me 2.7! I will need to have a c-section because baby is transverse breech, so any signs of labour and I'm off to the maternity ward! But for now just staying laid up,taking it easy

I'm pumped to almost be at 28 weeks..... Then maybe get to 32 weeks!!!!!
