What is your definition of 'light activity'??

Hi there. I am new here as I was just diagnosed with a short cervix at 20 weeks.  I was measuring a 2.6 and the doctor said, I am not yet alarmed but it has my attention. I was told to come back in 10 days to get measure again and I was measuring 2.3. From then we started talking about next steps and pros and cons on a cerclage or bed rest.  My doctor suggested doing very light activity.  If I could swing it, working from home was a good option too.  Like any other pregnant woman would do, I researched and researched and researched any and every outcome and possibility.  Nothing satisfied me.  It got to a point where I stopped everything on my own terms because simply getting up to walk across the living room made me feel guilty that every step I took I was shaving off a tiny milimeter of my cervix. step by step.  I was scheduled to go back another 2 weeks to get measured when I did, my cervix actually went to a 2.4!  So instructions now have been keep doing what you are doing for the remainder of the pregnancy and we will check your every 2 weeks for cervical length.  I'm kind of stuck in the middle. Each day I get braver and braver and maybe do a load of laundry and clean the house a little. Is that light activity? I know for sure pelvic rest is non negotiable. But what is your definition of light activity?  Seems everyone has their own version.  My nurse at the OB office said at 20 weeks she had to go on strict bed rest for remainder of hers but she got permission for every wednesday she got to go to the mall and walk around and stretch her legs for the day. What?? See how opinions differ? Oh and she gave birth at 36 weeks to an 8lb baby!  Also, I should probably share history.  This is my second pregnancy. My first pregnancy was no issue. Carried her to term, no problem. No red flags. Nothing.  So for this to happen on the second pregnancy, its baffled me.

Hi Erankin10,

Isn't it amazing how opinions vary!?  Through all the advice, web browsing (that I shouldn't's never good...) and opinions, I ultimately had to pick who sounded most credible--for me, that was my OB.  She has delivered thousands of babies and is a "high risk" OB.  My husband was always amazed how I could get so disregulated by things I'd hear, then as soon as I heard what my doctor said, I would take her as gospel.  But she's my "person."  So I wonder, what does your "person" say?

I can't tell you what is best for you because I just don't know!  I can only share my experience.  Having survived modified bed rest (which I did more as strict, since I was off work during that time), I can say that as brutal as bedrest is while you're in it, there's no better feeling than being handed a healthy baby who I kept cooking as long as possible.  And the time really does fly.  I can't believe I'm almost through another pregnancy...I felt like that last one would NEVER end. 

I know exactly what you mean about the guilt!  I would sit down to take baths instead of showers because I was so freaked out that standing was going to make her fall out.  I held myself to a strict 5 minutes per hour for potty, water refill and snack.  And looking back, I am so glad I did.  That moment of knowing that she's well and HERE! makes it totally worth it.  It's one choice at a time.  And you know what!?  With all that threat of her coming early, the little stinker had to be induced!   ???   Hang in there, we are with you in thought and prayer and commiseration!   :-*

At 19 weeks my cervix was 3.5 and I spotted so I went for an ultrasound which was okay. Then at 20 weeks, I had an repeat ultrasound and that's when I was also diagnosed with short cervix. I was measuring 2.5! I had to go to a specialist right away, and then every 2 weeks and also my ob doctor checked me every 2 weeks too. My cervix kept shortening that at my last check at 25 weeks, I was 0.9-1.7 ( varied depending on what angle they measured it, so they called it dynamic cervix). When I first saw the specialist, he told me to take it easy and just to do light activity. From the first time my cervix shorted, my OB doctor took me off work and told me that she went thru the same thing and that she put me on progesterone suppositories and strict bedrest. I trusted the specialist, but my OB doctor is my person, she has been amazing thru my whole experience and I chose to go with everything she told me. At the 25 week measurement, the specialist told me that I need to do strict bedrest- which I had been doing since 20 weeks. I truly believe that is what helped me get as far as I am. I am currently 29 weeks and had to be hospitalized and on magnesium 3 times for pre term labor, but I kept following my OB doctors instructions and baby has been able to stay put. They have stopped completely measuring my cervix, so my OB doctor checks me every 2 weeks when I go see her and I have been closed all this time. My Ob's situation was the same and she made it to 36 weeks and delivered a healthy baby. I pretty much only get up to pee, and take a full shower 2 times a week. I bought myself one of those peri bottles, so I use it every time I use the restroom since I can't take daily showers! I hope this helps, and hope to keep hearing from you as you keep cooking your baby :)
