Hello everyone, I am new here, pregnant with B/G twins and a first time mom. I went in at 17+6 and my OB wrote a 3.3 cm cervical length with a abdominal ultrasound. I went back this week at 20+4. I mentioned to my midwife that I had felt some pressure and tightness low in my stomach and she decided to do a trans vaginal ultrasound to measure my cervix. It is now down to 2.689 cm and my midwife mentioned I have some funneling. She started me on progesterone suppositories, and told me to cut back on activity, no exercise, rest if I can, cut back on sex, etc. But she never explicitly said bed rest. I am still putting myself on a modified bed rest at least until my next appointment with the OB at 21+6. I am, of course, very nervous about pre-term labor. Anyone in a similar situation or had a similar situation, what was your outcome? I want to keep these babies in as long as possible. Thanks so much!

**Update** Went im at 21+6 and cervix was 2.5, they had me come in the next week for a vaginal swab and another measure. Went back at 22+5 and found out my cervix went down to 1.1 cm and they also found an infection. They admitted me and I received steroid shots at 23 weeks for babies lungs and have been taking magnesium in addition to progesterone and antibiotics to combat infection. I’ve been in here a week already and going crazy (I’m 23+5 now). I have no other signs of labor (cramps, contractions, increased discharge or pain) and they say they may keep me another week but won’t tell me when they will remeasure. I’d really rather be at home if I’m just taking some pills than lying in a hospital bed. THoughts?

Hi,

Can't offer any specific hope or advice since my set of complications is different, but I just want to welcome you to the forum and wish you luck. Cervical lengths can fluctuate a bit depending on who does the measurements (for example at my recent scan the cervical measurement done by my ob and the tech were almost 1cm different), so I am hoping for you that you are back over 3cm at your next appointment. Time to see a MFM specialist if you aren't already. You are getting close to viability now so don't hesitate to go to hospital if you have any preterm labor symptoms. You are doing the right thing by taking it easy for now.

Let us know how your scan goes  :)

Hi Alexandra429....
I have a dynamic cervix (shortens and lengthens depending on pressure). With my first I was on strict bed rest at 22 weeks (cervix was 1.7). Baby was delivered via section at 39 weeks ( and he’s the best little boy).  Now I’m 30 weeks and cervix is 1.9, Im On a modified rest, and progesterone too.  Keep taking it easy.  It’s so much harder than people think, don’t let your mind get the best of you.
Congrats with carrying twins!  You have so much to look forward to, and this restful time will go by faster than you think! Your cervix did shorten quickly.... but your numbers seem pretty good!  I’ve read lots of stories where the measurement are in the mm!

Thank you and thanks for the responses! I am hoping that the rest has lengthened my cervix a bit. Although from my understanding, vaginal and abdominal ultrasounds vary slightly in measurements so hopefully that’s part of the discrepancy. My funneling is slight so hopefully that straightens itself out too. And I agree, rest is hard, it’s so aggravating just lying around. I do think the progesterone is helping, I’ve been on it for a few days now and I’ve only had one contraction all day today! So fingers crossed!

Hi Alexandra,
How are things?  We're in the same boat it sounds...Hi Ladies,
I am 23 weeks pregnant (tomorrow) with mono/di ID twin boys.  I have been having the odd contraction here and there for awhile but last week they became 5 mins apart so I went to the hospital.  My cervix has started to shorten but is still classed as closed.  They gave me a few doses of terbutaline and some BP meds that can help also....contractions still going but not as frequent, wish they would stop but as long as cervix isnt changing too much then they can be ok.

I am praying to get to at least 26 weeks at least to avoid 1) death or 2) serious neurological issues so I am TERRIFIED.
I don't even care about full term at this point...praying for anything past 26 weeks.  It is so frightening and for me after 9 pregnancies and one live birth, this is my last chance.

Hope to chat and thinking of you all, we can do this...I know that other have x

Hi Gethaline!

First of all, congrats on your twins! So exciting :) I completely understand your fears, I’m 24+1 today and my next goal is 26 weeks. I have felt good, mild Braxton Hicks (mainly when I have to go to the bathroom), and no other warning signs. My doctor just came in and said they will try to get an ultrasound (vaginal and abdominal) today to check the babies and my cervix length, so hopefully I’ll have an update by the end of today. I’m dying to know my length, even if it’s shortened at least I’ll know something. Praying that it’s at least stable. Are they keeping you at the hospital or sending you home to do bedrest?

Hi There,
Well done on making 24 weeks, it's every day as it comes.  Its absolutely hideous though isnt it?  NEVER imagined anything like this....I am at home on bed rest for now although hard as I have a 5 year old and no family...just my husband and I.  Ive had 7 miscarriages trying for a second and finally get pregnant, its twins and now this ...devastated.
I go back to Dr. tomorrow also to see what's happened over the weekend, praying for minimal change and closed.  I am on procardia but contractions haven' t really stopped but slowed down...had bad flare up at 5am today and thought that was it but settled again.
I wish we were just a few more weeks in as chances are so much better.  I feel so worries but some go full term even right like this?  My Dr says as long as contractions dont cause dilation/shortening they are what they are.  I dont even care about term anymore anything over 28 would be amazing in terms of odds.  Really sending you love and always here if you want to chat  :)
This too shall pass, just going to be a long few months x

Hi Gethaline!

It’s been a few days since I was on here. I’m 24+6 now and at 24+1 they found my cervix shortened more to .44 and I’m 1 cm dilated. Amniotic sacs seem to be fine, which is great news. I’m praying for 26 weeks. I feel your pain with no family. We are from the United States but my husbands work brought us to Italy. My mom flew in a couple of weeks ago to be with me while my husband left for a 3 week work training (just before I was admitted). He comes home in 6 days so we are hoping to keep the babies for at least that long. I’m like you though, just wanting to get to a more reasonable gestation. My cousin, who is a L&D nurse said she’s seen women hold out 1 cm dilated, short cervix, etc for weeks. So fingers crossed it works out for both of us!

Yay that is amazing, nearly 25 weeks....you can do this....sounds like many many women end up not being able to get the babies out in the end, despite short cervix and dilation so WE CAN DO THIS!  The bad days come and go so think of holding those babies in your arms and I am wishing for the next few weeks/months to speed by.  There's also magnesium sulphate in hospital that sounds like it can buy a few weeks also right?  At 28 weeks the odds seriously change and it sounds like most babies do amazingly well at that stage too.  Let's pray for 32-34.  YOURE NOT ALONE and I am sending you positive vibes.  I go back in on Monday for a cervix check and fibronectin test but all these contractions stress me out.  Did you have a fibronectin test at all?  My husband is away next week too so relying on neighbors to help me with my 5 Year old and school, she's amazing but not the easiest of kids so praying that doesnt push me over the edge in stress and shorten me more or dilation.  Keep me posted x
