21 weeks, bulging membranes, incompetent cervix
« on: October 17, 2010 at 12:11 PM »
 Hello...anyone out there?

My name is Katie and I went in Monday and found I was 4-5 cm dilated with the amniotic sac bulging into the vaginal canal. The doctors said it was too late for a rescue Cerclage and that infection and/or labor would set in any hour and we would lose our Baby Becca.
It's been almost a week and we are still here.
Becca was measuring a day or two ahead and 1lb 2oz so the doctors said if we make it 11 more days we can get antibiotics and steroid shots.

(typing one finger on an iPhone so sorry for lack of details!)

I'm on bedrest at the hotel across from the hospital. Doctors have given us no hope but we are putting our faith in God that he can get us to viability against all odds.

We are 22 weeks and 1 day but 22&3 adjusted.

Any similar experiences or stories?
Thank you!!!

Hi,

When I was 20 weeks pregnant with my triplet boys, I was rushed to L&D after (what I thought was) a routine visit to my maternal/fetal specialists.  Turns out my cervix was gone (I don't remember the details - was all to horrifying to remember).  Anyway, we were told we most likely had 72 hours before we'd lose the boys.  Was given the option to stay in the hospital on strict bedrest (no bathroom privileges or anything) or just go home and come back to deliver in a few days.  We couldn't imagine doing anything other than doing all we could to save these babies.  Was on 4 diffrent meds and hung onto those boys for 4 weeks.  They were delivered by emergency c-section at 24w, 0d. (2 days after they gave me the steroid injections)   Today they are 3 years old, in school, and are perfectly healthy, normal little boys (though they are on the small side).  We had a long first 1.5 years (one of my boys had a trach for that long), but once that was removed, we were on our way and in the clear.

I say all this so that you can keep your hopes up.  I remember waking up each day feeling like I had accomplished something major -- having made it another day on that bedrest journey.  So take it a day at a time, and as hard as it is, try to stay positive! :)

I will say prayers for you and your little one.  All my best - Raizel

And one other thing---

I was on magesium sulfate durng bedrest for two different period.  I was on a signifiant amount of it in the days leading up to the delivery.  None of my boys had any brain bleeds, and I later read an article about a study that doctors were starting to think that micropreemies whose mothers had been on magnesium sulfate prior to birth fared better as far as brain bleeds went.  I'm certainly no doctor, but I've always thought that might explain why my 3 kids did so well.  So it might be something to ask your doctor if delivery looks inevitable in the really early weeks.  (But hopefully you can keep that kiddo cooking for a while and not need to think about this! :) )

Congratulations on your pregnancy, but I am so, so sorry you are having to go through this.  This may sound strange but please ask someone to bring bricks (or an alternative) in to put under the end of your bed.  This will keep you on a backward tilt and keep any pressure what so ever off your cervix.  Dont sit up in bed with pillows etc - you need to be lying backwards.  I was in hospital for three months from 23 weeks with my first and my electric bed tilted backwards.  I did everything 'upside down'  Lay backwards to eat, drink etc.  It just makes sense to take all possible pressure off you cervix.  I didnt have any dilatation but I had funneling of membranes.  With the backward tilt bed rest, the funneling disappeared and my cervix lengthened.  I got to 38 weeks and two days and had to have a c-section as my lil man (who is now 2.5years old) was breech.  I am on 'modified' bed rest now with my second pregnancy.  Had a cerclage at 16 weeks and am now 28 weeks.  I am keeping everything crossed for you.  Keep your feet up and take care of that precious belly of yours.  Sending the biggest hugs and belly rubs.  Please keep us posted.  Ems xxxxxxxx

Hello Katie,

I have walked in your shoes, and it's really scary -- I am so sorry you are experiencing this, and I will be keeping you in my prayers. The fact that you've already made it a week is very hopeful.

With my current pregnancy, I went to the hospital at 14 weeks for a cerclage, and while I was in the recovery room, my water broke. I was devastated. They gave me very low odds that this baby would survive the week -- let alone make it to viability. But praise the Lord, my membranes miraculously resealed, and with 20 weeks on bedrest, I'm currently 34 weeks pregnant. I tell you this so that you will know that miracles do happen.

Please keep us posted.

God bless you.

Hi Katie:

As a suggestion, keep the lower half of your body comfortably elevated and place your right hand on your navel and left hand directly below.  This is considered energywork, which helps to balance challenges within the body.  Doing this daily is recommended.

This is not a substitute to care from your physician.  To learn more about energywork, consult with a qualified practitioner.

All the best,

Nicole

I never did update....better late than never, right?
We lost Becca at 23 weeks and 3 days due to infection and preterm labor. She passed about an hour after birth.
