21 weeks w/bulging membranes
« on: December 18, 2010 at 06:12 PM »
At my anatomy scan done at 19 weeks 2 days, they could not get good pictures of my cervix so I was sent to a parienatologist and was diagnosed with an Incompetent Cervix as it was only 1.5cm in cervical length compared to what its supposed to be (2.5-6cm), and the specialist scheduled me for weekly checkups until I was 24weeks.

At my second appt. which was yesterday we found that my cervix went from 1.5 to absolutely nothing, my cervix was completely opened and my membranes were bulging. The doctor was not in the office and had only view my ultrasound pictures because they were sent to her, she gave me two options
1- Go in and have an emergancy cerclage but she was giving my situation based on what she saw in the ultrasound pictures a 33% of them rupturing my membrane when doing the surgery.
2- option two was to go home and continue bedrest at home from roughly 2 and a half weeks until I was 23 weeks and 6days when they would admit me into the hopsital and I would start bed rest there and recieve the steroid shots to help mature the babys lungs.

I chose to go home until Tuesday when I would go back into the office and meet the doctor in person and she would give her an exam herself and give me a better idea of my odds and what to do.I am also going to try and become hopsitalized starting next week, because I feel that that is a better outcome, they can watch over me better and elevate my bed to possibly let gravity do its job and allow my membranes to go back into my uterus.

I am only 18, this is my first pregnancy, I am very scared and nervous.

Feeling scared and nervous is something we have definitely all been through. Sending you strength to make it to when your doctor can evaluate and help you make the best decisions for you and your baby. Keep us updated.

Based on what i was told in my case I think a cerclage would have been a big risk for you under your conditions.  STAY LAYING AT ALL TIMES.  With my last pregnancy my cervix was 1.2 (pretty much nothing) at 25 weeks. That's when they discovered it because of all the pressure i was feeling.  I probably thined-out a few weeks before that.  I was on bedrest at home, with a lot of support from my mother and husband, and i kept her in for 38 weeks.  I strongly believe that if it wouldn't have been for bedrest, things could've been different.  With this pregnancey, things are a little more delicate.  I am 24 weeks and i was admitted today for hospital bedrest  and given a steroid shot to mature baby's lung because they found that i had a non-measurable cervix and membranes were about to bulge-out at 22 weeks.  I was at home for 2 weeks and a cerclage was too late for me.  This happened even with weekly monitoring of my cervix.  It went in no time.  I should have insisted on a cerclage at the beginning of this pregnancy even after they kept saying they couldn't consider i had an incompetent cervix because i hadn't lost a pregnancy and i had kept my daughter for 38 weeks - the only way i believe I kept her in was not moving for 3.5 months in bedrest.
I tell you my story because I know it helps to know there are others in your similar situation.  What we need to do now is try and stay in bedrest - WE CAN DO THIS.  When you go to your doc's apt. do not drive yourself and make sure you tell the staff of your situation when u get there so they lay you down while you wait for the doc.
I too feel scared and nervouse - we have to do the only thing we can do within our power, and that is bedrest, everything else, we must leave to our higher power.
Please keep me posted on your situation.
Good luck!

I was very blessed to keep my first baby in for 38 weeks with a cervix of 1.2 and no cerclage. This time around, things are more delicate with no cervix, and again, the only option is bedrest.  When you are left with no options, bedrest is the only thing within our power that we can do to keep the baby in as long as possible.
Sending you and all the ladies on bedrest lots of strength.
Good luck to all!!
